Bills QB Josh Allen Faces Calls for NFL Punishment After Dolphins Incident

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen was hit with a fine for his “violent” celebration in a win over the Kansas City Chiefs, and some NFL pundits believe he should face more punishment for his actions in last week’s loss to the Miami Dolphins.

Allen has gained a reputation for embellishing contact in an attempt to draw roughing the passer calls, which has led to some sharp criticism at times. The Bills quarterback was accused of flopping in the win over the Chiefs and again last week, when he threw his head back after what appeared to be light contact from a Dolphins defender.

The incidents have left some calling for the NFL to punish Allen, taking the lead from the NBA and its crackdown on flopping among players.

“Honest opinion, this should be a suspension or at least or serious fine… for Josh Allen,” one fan shared in a post on X.

The NFL will announce fines for all Week 10 games on Saturday, but it does not appear that Allen’s play is eligible for punishment. The league outlines several different actions that can lead to a penalty — including “violent” celebrations like the one Allen did the previous week — but does not have any stipulation for flopping.

Josh Allen Facing Pushback

Allen’s play against the Dolphins drew some immediate pushback, with many sharing it and questioning whether the Bills quarterback should have been the one flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Replay showed Allen pointing to his head several times after being knocked to the ground, asking referees to throw a flag for roughing the passer.

“Josh Allen always seems to snap his neck back a lots should this have been a flag?” noted the Rate the Refs account on X.

Others suggested that the league should go a step further, fining Allen for his play. The Bills quarterback was already fined for a “violent” celebration after a rushing touchdown against the Chiefs, when he and wide receiver Elijah Moore appeared to mimick a gun firing.

Nick Wright Takes Aim at Josh Allen

FS1 commentator Nick Wright, who has never shied away from criticizing Allen, offered his own suggestion for how the NFL can handle flopping. After Allen’s controversial play against the Chiefs, Wright said the NFL should handle embellished contact the same as real contact and evaluate players for injuries.

“The biggest flopper in the league for five years has been Josh [Allen]. It’s not even close,” Wright said, via SI.com. “The one from Josh this weekend was egregious. … Here’s a rule that I think could be implemented and have instant effect: if you make that whiplash motion with your head, it automatically triggers that you have to be checked for a concussion.

“If you’re going to try to take advantage of the fact that the NFL has put a real emphasis on protecting you and concussion protocols and try to get a cheap 15 yards, the tax on that is, ‘All right, go in that blue tent, miss a few plays.’ That’s what it should be. You gotta own it.”
