Toronto Blue Jays star shortstop Bo Bichette got a major update on his free agency.
Bichette remains on the open market, and there hasn’t been much of an update on him. It’s been a quiet market so far, as the Blue Jays remain the likely favorite to sign him, but he’s also been linked to the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees, among other teams.
Although the market for Bichette doesn’t appear to be as fruitful as expected, ESPN MLB insider Kiley McDaniel gave the Blue Jays star a new contract prediction. His first prediction had him signing a five-year, $130 million contract, but Rogers has increased that to five years, $150 million.
“Bichette will be 28 on Opening Day, making him the youngest of this group, but he was limited to 139 games in 2025, missing time because of a knee injury in September,” the ESPN article read. “He finished the season with 3.8 fWAR and missed the first two rounds of the postseason before returning for the World Series. Bichette is one of the best contact hitters in the sport, but he’s also valuable because he plays in the middle of the diamond even if he doesn’t finish his career as a shortstop.”
Although Bichette may not stay at shortstop, McDaniel still believes he will get a hefty contract this offseason.
“Bichette is also a couple of years younger than Adames, putting him more in line age-wise with Carlos Correa, who signed a six-year, $200 million contract after a 4.6 fWAR season with Minnesota in 2022. McDaniel’s original projection: Five years, $130 million. McDaniel’s updated projection: Five years, $150 million (assuming long-term deal vs. shorter with opt-outs).”
Bichette is a two-time MLB All-Star.
Blue Jays Owner Would Like Bichette Back
Bichette is one of the top free agents available, and the Blue Jays are leaving the door open for a return.
Blue Jays owner Edward Rogers said after the team extended CEO and President Mark Shapiro that he’s hopeful to bring Bichette back.
“Bo has been a part of this team throughout his career. It’s home for him. I’m hopeful we have the best, most competitive team we can,” Rogers said to Toronto Star’s Gregor Chisholm. “I’m not part of that decision-making. That’s (general manager) Ross (Atkins) and Mark. We’re working hard to try to figure that out.”
If the Blue Jays don’t sign Bichette, Rogers said Toronto will still field a competive team as they look to bring a World Series north of the border.
“I’d say what we saw through the playoffs was that Bo performed well through the World Series run,” Rogers said. “But so many of our players came up, and I find teams that have deep bonds, obviously the stars shine, but a lot of other people need to shine to be a competitive team and we have amazing depth.”
Toronto has the sixth-best odds to win the World Series at +1500.
Bichette Wants to Remain in Toronto
Although Bichette remains a free agent, many have expected that he will re-sign in Toronto.
Following the Blue Jays’ Game 7 loss in the World Series, Bichette said in the clubhouse that he would like to return.
“I said I want to be here from the beginning,” Bichette said after Game 7.
Bichette has spent his entire career in Toronto and has said he wants to play his entire career alongside Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who inked a 14-year extension.
