Braves’ Controversial Starter Shines in Season Debut Vs. Athletics

The Atlanta Braves are taking on the Athletics in a three-game set at Truist Park. After going 2-1 in their first series and carrying a 3-0 lead into the seventh inning of game one against the Athletics, Braves fans should be very encouraged by controversial starter Bryce Elder.

Heading into the 2026 season, among many Braves fans, there was a big debate on what Bryce Elder’s role should be with the team. In Elder’s season debut on Monday, the 26-year-old starter in his fifth MLB season proved the doubters wrong.  In six innings pitched, Elder has surrendered just five hits and one walk. He also recorded five strikeouts to the awe of many Atlanta sports supporters.

He was pulled in the seventh innings for Aaron Bummer.

Braves’ Injuries Will Lead to More Bryce Elder

With the Atlanta Braves dealing with several injuries to starters (Spencer Strider, Spencer Schwellenbach, Hurston Waldrep), Bryce Elder will be in the fold for the first couple of months (at least) of the season.

Especially after his season debut, Elder’s role will be viewed in a more positive light.

In 2025, Elder made 28 starts but boasted a 5.30 ERA. The biggest draw on Elder is his ability to take the ball every fifth day. Atlanta does not have to worry about Elder’s injury status as much as other pitchers, and if his first start of the season is concerned, Bryce Elder is enjoying the new Braves’ pitching coaches.

Braves’ Fans React to Bryce Elder’s Strong Opening Start

As you can imagine, there has been a strong reaction on social media to Bryce Elder’s strong first start of the season.

Here are some of the best:

@ATLChamps9521: Bryce Elder deserves a tip of the cap. He pitched a DAM good game tonight.
@JeffSlanovec: Six shutout innings from Bryce Elder to start the season. Maybe the baseball season won’t be so awful after all…
@Rileysglove: BRYCE ELDER CY YOUNG SEASON CONFIRMED, WHOOOO HAS IT BETTER THAN US???????
The strong start is a good sign for the Braves,  but Bryce Elder still has some ways to go before winning over all Atlanta fans.
