Bernie Kosar will undergo a liver transplant on Monday, the former Cleveland Browns quarterback announced.
âIt might not be Victory Monday on the field, but it is a Victory Monday for me at UH as I head into surgery today,â Kosar wrote on social media. âI canât thank you all enough for the love and support â it truly means everything. Stay tuned for more updates!â
The 61-year-old has been hospitalized with internal bleeding while awaiting a transplant. One had been scheduled for last weekend, but it was delayed after the donor organ was found to be infected. That led to Kosar needing âtwo aggressiveâ procedures to treat internal bleeding.
âMan, all the duress right now, I could really use your love and support and prayers today,â Kosar said Wednesday in a video.
Kosar Suffering From Multiple Health Issues
In July 2024, Kosar revealed that he had been diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver and Parkinsonâs disease.
âMy body gave out on me,â he told Cleveland Magazine. âI really felt like I wasnât going to make it home from the Jets game. I sucked it up, though, and continued to avoid the doctors until the new year. Then I went into the hospital and got a massive blood transfusion. It was like, âHow are you alive? How are you moving? Because your hemoglobin levels are so low.’â
Kosar became sick again while traveling to Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas last February, leading him to be hospitalized for several days.
Kosar Was Fixture at QB for Browns
After winning an NCAA title with the University of Miami in 1983, Kosar was selected by Cleveland in the 1985 supplemental draft. He played parts of nine seasons with the Browns, helping lead the franchise to three AFC title games.
Before spending his final three seasons with the Miami Dolphins, Kosar won a Super Bowl XXVIII ring with the Dallas Cowboys while serving as Troy Aikmanâs backup.
In 12 NFL seasons, Kosar passed for 23,301 yards with 124 touchdowns and 87 interceptions.
Before Sundayâs game against the Baltimore Ravens, the team delivered a tribute to Kosar at Huntington Bank Field.
