The Cleveland Browns will be remaining with Shedeur Sanders at quarterback.
Sanders started his second-straight game on Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers. The rookie had a rough outing against the 49ers‘ defense as he was sacked three times, but did throw for a touchdown.
Despite Sanders having mixed results, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski announced that the rookie will start next Sunday against the Tennessee Titans.
“Yes,” Stefanski said postgame on Sunday when asked if Sanders will remain the starting quarterback.
Although Stefanski announced Sanders as his starter in Week 14, he wouldn’t confirm that the rookie would be the starter for the rest of the season.
“I’m not going to get into that, other than we all have to get better,” Stefanski said.
Stefanski felt like Sanders made some nice plays, but there are plays the rookie quarterback wants to have back.
“I’d have to look at it. He’s battling; all our guys are battling. I know there are plays he’d want to have back. We’ll look at it, we will correct it,” Stefanski added.
Sanders went 16-of-25 for 149 yards and one touchdown in the 26-8 home loss to the 49ers on Sunday.
Stefanski Praised Sanders Before 49ers Game
Although Sanders had a tough outing against the 49ers, Stefanski had been impressed with his week of practice.
The Browns’ head coach thought Sanders was very committed to getting better and was pleased with what he saw in practice.
“Very committed to working at it, doing a great job, communicating with his coaches, with the players,” Stefanski said on Friday. “Good work week, but nothing different. I think any player though, once you get one game under your belt, you got the next one coming. I think it can only help.”
Browns’ offensive coordinator Tommy Rees, meanwhile, also praised Sanders for his work ethic in practice before the game.
“I think Shedeur’s done a really nice job this week of continuing to prep and really starting to hone in on the things we’re asking of him and excited for another opportunity,” Rees added.
It appears the work in practice with the first-team offense was enough for Sanders to remain the starting quarterback, at least for one more week.
Browns Fans React to Sanders Remaining at QB
Following Stefanski’s decision to name Sanders the starter for Week 14, Browns fans were excited about the news.
“Huge move by Stefanski, rolling with Shedeur again shows they’re fully leaning into the future. Big spotlight game next week… if he pops, the entire QB conversation in Cleveland flips overnight,” one fan wrote.
“He continues to impress the Browns front office and coaching staff,” another fan added.
However, many Browns fans are hoping that Sanders can get the chance to throw the ball more, as Dillon Gabriel did.
“So Kevin stefanski let Dillon Gabriel get off 50 passes vs the steelers and nearly 40 multiple times but shedeur sanders has to hand it off 3 times a drive ? Ight man .. this is nasty work,” a fan wrote.
“Maybe let HIM THROW THE BALL,” another fan wrote.
The Browns will host the Tennessee Titans on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
