Browns QB Shedeur Sanders Put in Place by Former NFL Coach

A former NFL head coach ripped into Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders, blasting his recent remarks about quarterback play across the league and his eagerness to take the field.

Sanders is the No. 3 quarterback on the depth chart in Cleveland, behind Joe Flacco and Dillon Gabriel. He’s served as the emergency quarterback on game days, suiting up but officially inactive. Sanders is only able to enter the game if both Flacco and Gabriel are injured.

Sanders has been relatively quiet about his situation since the start of the season. However, he spoke to reporters last week, causing a stir with his comments.

“I know if you see the quarterback play in the league right now, I know I’m capable of doing better than that,” Sanders said. “(There’s) obvious a lot of teams would be playing me, but that’s not in God’s plan right now. And some things happen for a reason and I’m a true believer in that. And whatever his plan for me is I believe in it. So I don’t be stressed or feel bad that I’m in the situation I’m in right now. It’s just funny to me and I just enjoy it.”

Rex Ryan to Browns QB Shedeur Sanders: Quit Being An Embarrassment

The comments from Sanders did not sit well with former NFL head coach Rex Ryan, who called out the former Colorado star on ESPN’s “Get Up.”

“Something’s missing with this kid. This kid talks and he runs his mouth. Like he said, ‘I can be a starting quarterback’ with his arms crossed like this,” Ryan said. “Get your ass in the front row and study and do all that. If I know, the whole league knows. Quit being an embarrassment that way. You’ve got the talent to be the quarterback, you should be. You should be embarrassed that you’re not the quarterback now.”

Sanders had a mixed preseason with the Browns but never seemed truly in the mix in the four-man competition for the No. 1 role. He had a stellar start against the Carolina Panthers, completing 14 of 23 passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns. But he also had a miserable outing in the team’s final preseason outing. He completed just 3 of 6 passes for 14 yards and took five sacks for a 41-yard loss.

Browns Mulling Quarterback Change With Flacco Struggling

The Browns are weighing whether to bench Flacco after a 1-3 start that has featured one of the league’s least productive offenses.

Flacco, 40, ranks last in the NFL with a 60.3 passer rating. Cleveland is averaging under 14 points per game with him at quarterback, and he has already committed eight turnovers — six interceptions and two lost fumbles. The Browns are coming off a 34-10 pummeling against the Detroit Lions in which Flacco threw two interceptions and lost a fumble.

Some insiders believe Gabriel could get the call this week in hopes of sparking the offense. If that happens, it’s unclear whether Sanders would move up to the No. 2 role, putting him one step away from playing time. The Browns face the Minnesota Vikings this week in London.
