Noted Shedeur Sanders critic Rex Ryan had some words for the Cleveland Browns quarterback after his debut on Sunday, taking aim at his postgame actions.
Sanders entered at halftime after Dillon Gabriel exited with a concussion, but his debut didn’t go as hoped. He completed just four passes for 47 yards and threw an interception, struggling to find any rhythm with the offense. The former Colorado star looked unprepared for the moment and was unable to provide a late spark in Cleveland’s 23-16 loss.
After the loss, Sanders sat alone on the bench. Ryan was not a fan of the move from Sanders.
“Shedeur, he’s gotta get over himself too,” Ryan said. “Like he’s there by himself on the bench [at the end of the game]. I’ve never seen that. I’ve seen it in the seventh game of the World Series when you lose a game or whatever. This is a game — it’s a pillow fight game. Nobody cares.”
Ryan accused Sanders of playing up his emotions after the loss, suggesting the quarterback’s show of frustration wasn’t entirely genuine.
“Did he care? Or are you trying to make it a show of making it about yourself?” Ryan said. “You’ve got a guy over there that by the way is a two-time MVP, right there, Lamar Jackson. He was looking for you. Why don’t you share a moment with him? Alright. Share a moment with Lamar. He’s looking all over for you. Then get in there with your teammates. These are your teammates. And talking about, ‘I’m not comfortable losing.’ You think anyone in that locker room is? They better not be.”
Rex Ryan Has History With Browns QB Shedeur Sanders
It’s not the first time Ryan has called out Sanders. Earlier this year, he told Sanders to stop running his mouth and to study his playbook. Sanders responded by giving an interview in which he did not speak and mimed his answers.
Shortly after, Sanders addressed the criticism — with words this time — and said he was banning negativity.
“He’s just trying to start something,” Sanders said. “We not on no negativity from now on. We not doing that. I’m just here to be positive, and I don’t speak on anything negative.
“That’s the new way, that’s what we going forward with. Anything negative, we not talking about it, we not speaking on it.”
Shedeur Sanders Addressed Browns Locker Room After Loss
Sanders took accountability for his poor play after the loss. He also spoke to the entire Browns locker room, taking the blame. Veteran defensive end Myles Garrett, who had four sacks in the loss, wouldn’t let him do that.
“I’m just trying to keep him to keep his confidence high and keep on chasing that standard in which he’s set, and we’re going to continue to support him,” Garrett said. “He spoke after the game and he wanted to pin it on himself and his performance, but we’re not going to allow him to do that. It’s a team game, so we’re all in this together.”
Sanders is in line to draw his first NFL start on Sunday if Gabriel is unable to clear concussion protocol. The Browns are hitting the road to take on the two-win Las Vegas Raiders.
