For the five years he has been an impact defender in the Browns’ defensive backfield, Grant Delpit has brought the confidence and swagger that Cleveland otherwise mostly lacks. He will trash-talk opposing stars, he will make the bold prediction and from time to time, he even backs it up. In a way, he has some things in common with new Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders on that front.
Delpit, naturally, was not all that happy with with way things unfolded on Sunday for the Browns, the team with the top defense in the league that was somehow knocked around by a lowly Titans team that came in with one win. Tennessee gained 292 yards of total offense, with a season-high 184 of those yards coming on the ground.
Delpit was not sure why the effort was not there for the Browns defense in the game.
“That’s a good question,” he said. “We put bad ball on tape, bad film. It just starts to spiral. As we see, we started slow on defense and that kind of spiral. We were able to get the lead back at halftime but then, the turnovers and we didn’t stand up in the red zone, so that’s how the game goes. We just put a bad ball out there today.”
Browns Got 384 Yards From Shedeur Sanders
But, like most in the Browns organization, and most team observers, Delpit did see the silver lining in Week 14’s loss. That was Sanders, who threw for 384 yards and had three touchdowns with an interception. Two of those touchdowns came in the fourth quarter as he brought the team back from a 31-17 deficit.
Delpit had a message for Sanders: The Browns D should have played better complementary football to support him.
“He (QB Shedeur Sanders) played with heart, man,” Delpit said. “I think the whole offense, they put up a lot of points. They had ups and downs, but he was throwing the ball not perfectly, but it looked pretty good and we just have to be able to have his back as a defense. He’s our quarterback, we have to get him the ball back when they put us in some hard spots.”

Browns Vet ‘Appreciated the Fight’
Indeed, it was hardly a perfect day for the Browns offense on Sunday, even with Sanders’ big numbers. The Titans’ first two drives began around the 50-yard line, and three times in the second half, Browns mistakes–an interception from Sanders, a fumble by Quinshon Judkins, and a blocked punt–left the defense guarding a short field.
But again, Sanders kept bringing the team back, despite the mistakes and the Titans’ ability to cash in those mistakes. And among the veterans on the roster, that was an impressive feature of Sunday’s game.
As 12-year veteran and eight-time Pro Bowler Mark Bitonio said, “(Shedeur Sanders is) a competitor. I appreciated the fight, I told him that. He’s shown in his three starts now that he can make some plays for us. Those two two-minute drives just made things happen. I have to block forever, cause he’s going to try to make a play. There were some big-time plays that he made for us and kept us in the game.”
