The Boston Celtics spent this offseason reshaping their roster and resetting their books. By trading Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday, and watching Al Horford and Luke Kornet leave in free agency, the team reached its main goal. They slid under the second apron.
Brad Stevens described the moves as a necessary reset. New owner Bill Chisholm called flexibility “paramount” in his introductory press conference. The message was clear. Boston is building toward bigger opportunities.
There are already names being floated for when that flexibility comes into play. One of them is Chicago Bulls guard Ayo Dosunmu.
Why Dosunmu Fits the Celtics’ Future
In a recent column, CelticsBlog’s Jack Anderson pointed to Dosunmu as a realistic target under the new financial setup. At 25, the Bulls guard is still developing, but his two-way profile is intriguing.
Dosunmu averaged 12.3 points, 4.5 assists, and 3.5 rebounds in 46 games last season. He is not a defensive playmaker in the traditional sense. But he competes, stays active on the perimeter, and has built a reputation as a strong screen navigator.
That type of effort would fit Boston’s identity, especially in a guard rotation that leans heavily on Derrick White and Payton Pritchard.
The Celtics and the Question of Shooting
For Dosunmu, the swing skill is his jumper. In 2023–24, he shot 40% from three. Last season, that number slid to 33%. The streakiness has followed him throughout his career. It is what separates him from being a role player versus a reliable 3-and-D option.
For a Celtics team built on spacing, his perimeter shooting would be critical. If he can stabilize his jumper, Dosunmu looks like the kind of guard who could play real minutes on a contender.
Why Dosunmu Makes Sense Financially
The most appealing part of Dosunmu’s profile may be his cost. Unlike stars who require massive trade packages or expensive deals, he projects as a value signing. Boston could add him without sacrificing future flexibility. That is exactly the type of move the front office positioned itself for this summer.
If Chicago continues to retool, Dosunmu could be available at a number that works for Boston. In that case, he becomes the type of under-the-radar addition that rounds out a championship roster.
What’s Next for the Celtics?
For now, the Celtics will enter the season with the roster they have built. But the real payoff from this summer’s reset may not come until 2026.
If Dosunmu hits the market, Boston could be among the teams best positioned to land him. He is not a headline name, but he fits the mold of a low-cost, high-effort guard who could help the Celtics build their next contending core. He is athletic, has a strong motor, and still has room to grow. If his jumper improves, he could turn into the kind of savvy pickup that changes the course of a season.
