The Kansas City Chiefs had their backs against the wall with the high-flying Colts coming to town, and they responded in a big way. Sitting at 5-5 and needing a big win to stay involved in the playoff race, the Chiefs roared back from 11 down in the fourth quarter to win 23-20 in overtime against Indy.
The win marks the first one-score game the Chiefs have won this season after going 0-5 in such games to open the year. Entering Sunday’s action, the Chiefs ranked sixth in the NFL with a +73 point differential despite being just .500. This indicates that Kansas City was playing like one of the best teams in the league, even if their record didn’t necessarily show it. Last season, the Chiefs went 11-0 in one-score games on their way to a Super Bowl appearance.
Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid with Some Injury Updates After the Game

Three Chiefs players exited the win with injuries. The absence with the biggest impact was All-Pro G Trey Smith, who didn’t play at all in the second half after getting his ankle taped on the sideline. Late in the game, TE Noah Gray made a spectacular catch in a key moment, managing to hang on to the football despite taking a massive hit and appearing to briefly lose consciousness.
“As far as the injuries go: Trey Smith hurt his ankle,” Chiefs HC Andy Reid said in his post-game press conference. [Backup G Mike] Caliendo came in and did a nice job for him but we’ll see how it is as the days go forward. [CB Chris] Roland-Wallace hurt his lower back, y’know we’ll just see how it goes this week. And then Noah got hit in the head, and so he’ll go through evaluations there, so we’ll see how that goes.”
If Smith is forced to miss time, it would be a big blow to the Chiefs offense. He’s one of the best guards in the league and is particularly adept at run blocking, ranking 11th out of 81 qualifying guards in PFF grade. In the first half, Kansas City dominated the Colts defense on the ground, but with Smith out in the second half they struggled to move the ball consistently by running it. Ironically, when they started to air it out more in the second half, their offense got a real spark.
The Kansas City Chiefs Have New Playoff Life
Stop me if you’ve heard this before: the Chiefs are dangerous and no one wants to face them in January. At 6-5, they are still technically 10th in the AFC. But they are in a four-way tie with the Ravens, Steelers, and Texans, and will have plenty of opportunities to stack more wins down the stretch.
Coming up, the Chiefs play the Cowboys, Texans, Chargers, Titans, Broncos, and Raiders. That’s not the easiest remaining slate in the league, but those are all winnable games, too. Kansas City has some catching up to do, particularly if they want to overtake the Broncos in the AFC West. But they are far from done.
