With the Kansas City Chiefs‘ season slowly coming to a close, focus will soon shift to the offseason. Change is coming, and it isn’t just at the player personnel level. Some coaches and front office staff could find new homes over the next few months.
Is one of those folks offensive coordinator Matt Nagy? Without saying it, that’s what he’s hoping for. The former Chicago Bears head coach, now boasting eight years of coordinator or lead-man experience, is a candidate to get another head coaching shot.
That buzz is doing nothing but ramp up with Week 18 arriving.
Old Friend Could Come to Matt Nagy’s Aid in HC Job Search
The prominent team in the Nagy sweepstakes seems to be the Tennessee Titans. Is there real smoke regarding that possibility? Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero of NFL Media added some fuel to the fire in a January 2 report.
Tennessee is restructuring its balance of power in the football operations department. General manager Mike Borgonzi, a longtime Brett Veach right-hand man in Kansas City, now has full control over the 53-man roster. He’s leading the Titans’ quest for a new head coach, too, which could spell good news for Nagy.
According to Rapoport and Pelissero, Nagy is expected to potentially interview for the opening.
“Former NFL head coaches Mike McCarthy and Matt Nagy (currently the Chiefs OC) — who worked with Brinker and Borgonzi, respectively — are expected to be among the Titans’ candidates when interviews begin next week,” the report stated. “But the team will take a deliberate approach to finding its next leader.”
The story adds that the shuffling of front office roles stems from the prior experience of Borzongi and Chad Brinker, Tennessee’s president of football ops. Should Nagy indeed interview, however, it shouldn’t be viewed as merely a favor called in to an old friend. He’s been tied to the coaching carousel for quite some time.
Just over a year ago, Nagy was linked to the New York Jets and New Orleans Saints‘ jobs. Over the summer, hype for a “second look” at head coaching persisted. This is nothing new.
Sleeper Emerging As Potential Other Opening for Nagy in 2026?
What is new, though, is another team’s name being lumped in with Nagy’s. In a January 3 report for The Athletic, insider Dianna Russini mentioned an NFC club that could be interested in acquiring the 47-year-old’s services.
Russini confirmed Nagy could interview with the Titans. Additionally, the New York Giants may inquire about his availability.
“Among the names expected to interview for one or both jobs next week: Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy, Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo and Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury,” Russini wrote. “Coordinators on playoff teams who are also expected to be in the mix include Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley, Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula, San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, Jacksonville Jaguars defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile and Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak.”
It’s a list chock-full of impressive names. Nagy will certainly face fierce competition if he reenters the proverbial game of musical chairs. Is he ready for it? Head coach Andy Reid and the rest of the Chiefs believe so. That, paired with his contract being set to expire after this season, could see the stars align.
In his first and only stint as a head coach, Nagy led the Bears to a 34-31 record. He also had a pair of appearances in the postseason, going 0-2. A 12-4 2018 campaign saw him win AP Coach of the Year, but that feels like a distant memory now.
With several years under Reid’s tutelage again, is now the time for Nagy to get back into the world of head coaching? If the chatter of early January is any indication, that answer may be yes.
