Colts RB Jonathan Taylor Reacts to Historic Performance After Beating Falcons

Indianapolis Colts RB Jonathan Taylor had a historic day in Berlin, Germany on Sunday in an overtime victory over the Falcons. Not only were his stats in that game great — 244 rushing yards at 7.6 yards per carry and three touchdowns, to go with three receptions for 42 yards — but he broke the Colts’ franchise records for rushing touchdowns. In his six seasons with the team, Taylor has 66 rushing touchdowns, two more than the previous record holder, RB Edgerrin James, who had 64. Taylor entered the game tied with RB Lenny Moore with 63 career rushing touchdowns.

It’s not the only Colts franchise record Taylor holds. He also has the Indianapolis record for most points in a game, most non-kicker points in a season, most touchdowns in a game, most touchdowns in a season (tied with RB Lenny Moore), most rushing yards in a game, most rushing yards in a season, and longest rush in a game.

“I mean, not only — not only [Edgerrin James] who had the record, but you just think about the guys who had it in this organization beforehand, and to be named among those legends, it means a lot,” Taylor said on Sunday after the win over the Falcons, the game in which he broke the Colts franchise rushing touchdowns record.

“You know, I don’t take it for granted, but I also understand how those guys got there and how I got there. And it’s the guys around you — it’s the guys around you that support you. Like I mentioned, the guys on the edge. Also the tight ends, the o-line — it’s those guys who put you into that category. So I appreciate my teammates so much, and it means a lot.”

“[The Falcons defense] actually did a great job of penetrating all of the gaps,” Taylor said on his 83-yard touchdown run that gave Indianapolis the lead in the fourth quarter. “But I just know that my guys on the edge — [WR Michael Pittman Jr.], [WR Alec Pierce] — when I bounce to the outside, there’s no lack of trust. It’s just hit the edge full-speed, because I know once they see me spring to the outside they’re gonna turn around, find some work. And I think when you have that type of trust with the guys on the edge, you get those special runs like that. They’re who make it go.”

Indianapolis Colts HC Shane Steichen on Taylor’s Record and Performance

Colts HC Shane Steichen was fired up about the win and Taylor’s record in the locker room after the game, motivating his team heading into their bye week with an enthusiastic speech after the win.

“Hey! Most rushing touchdowns in franchise history, Jonathan Taylor!,” Steichen said post-game, to raucous cheers from the players.

“Well, I didn’t run out of stuff in [the locker room],” Steichen said in his press conference after the game. “I mean, [Taylor] setting a franchise record for rushing touchdowns is pretty impressive, obviously. In Year 6, doing that in Year 6, is phenomenal the way he’s been running. I think we had 323 yards on the ground. So credit to the guys up front, credit to him, the way he ran. He ran hard all day.”

“Yeah, he was humming pretty good,” Steichen continued. “Obviously we popped a big one there in the fourth quarter — it was kind of just mashed up in there and he bounced it to the left and hit it down the sideline. That was a huge run that kinda got some good momentum, good juice going for us there.”
