The Washington Commanders made a handful of significant roster moves ahead of their “Monday Night Football” matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs on October 27.
Ben Standig, a team reporter formerly of The Athletic, broke the news of those moves via social media a few hours before kickoff.
“[Kicker] Matt Gay (back) is OUT for MNF. The Commanders signed [kicker] Matthew Wright to the practice squad and elevated him for the game along with DT Sheldon Day,” Standig wrote. “They released WR Robbie Chosen from the practice squad.”
Gay, a seven-year veteran, has been perfect on extra points for the Commanders this season (18-of-18) but has been relatively unreliable on field goal tries, missing four of the 14 boots he has attempted through seven games, three of which came from beyond 50 yards.
Wright is a six-year veteran who has missed eight career field goals in 64 attempts and is 42-of-44 for his career on extra point tries. He played for three teams in 2024, connecting on 15-of-16 field goal shots and made his sole field goal attempt in 2025 for the Tennessee Titans, a team for which he appeared in one game.
Robbie Chosen Has Played in Just 1 Game for Commanders This Season

GettyWide receiver Robbie Chosen, formerly of the Washington Commanders.
Chosen, now 32 years old, is a 10-year veteran who saw action for the Commanders in one game this season. He caught four passes on four targets for 36 yards and one first down.
The wideout tipped over 1,000 yards receiving in 2020, the sole time he eclipsed that mark in his NFL career. His production and overall usage fell off precipitously following the 2022 campaign, which he split between the Carolina Panthers and Arizona Cardinals.
Chosen caught on with the Miami Dolphins in 2023, appearing in nine games but tallying just four receptions on the season. He saw action in two contests last season, but caught just one pass.
For his career, Chosen has tallied 384 catches for 5,123 receiving yards and 30 touchdowns.
Commanders Massive Underdogs Against Chiefs Without QB Jayden Daniels

GettyWashington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels.
The greater concern by far over Chosen’s exit from the team and Gay’s injury absence is that quarterback Jayden Daniels will sit out Monday night’s game with a hamstring injury.
Daniels sustained the injury against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 7 after already sitting out two contests earlier this year with a knee injury.
Washington flirted with the notion of playing Daniels against Kansas City, but ultimately decided not to do so, as any further issue could sideline him for a month. The Commanders believe by sitting Daniels this week, there is a good chance the second-year signal-caller can make his return to the field against the Seattle Seahawks on November 2.
Thus, starting in Daniels’ place is backup Marcus Mariota. He is 1-1 in a starting role for the Commanders this season and has thrown for 426 yards, three TDs and two INTs.
Washington enters Monday’s contest as a 10.5-point road underdog in Kansas City, after the Chiefs opened the week as 9.5-point favorites, per ESPN BET.
