The Commanders wasted little time finding help in the secondary following a devastating injury to star cornerback Marshon Lattimore. According to Aaron Wilson of KRPC 2 in Houston, the Commanders signed former Giants cornerback Tre Hawkins III to their practice squad on Tuesday.
Hawkins, 25, was drafted by New York in the sixth round of the 2023 draft. Heâs appeared in 20 games with four starts over his NFL career, recording 45 tackles and one interception.
Hawkins Has Received Significant NFL Interest
Hawkins has generated plenty of interest ever since the Giants waived him in August with an injury designation. Wilson reported last month that the Ravens, Lions, Dolphins and Colts had all checked in on the third-year cornerback, who appears fully recovered from a hamstring issue that landed him on injured reserve.
Hawkins most recently worked out with the 49ers but left without signing a deal.
While Hawkins hasnât been very productive in the NFL, heâs still young enough to get better and play to his potential after opening eyes during training camp as a rookie.
Lattimore Will Miss Rest of Season With ACL Injury
Lattimore is out for the rest of the season after tearing his ACL in Sundayâs 38-14 loss to the Seahawks. The four-time Pro Bowler will land on IR, joining wide receiver Luke McCaffrey (broken collarbone) and defensive end Deatrich Wise Jr. (torn quad muscle), among others.
Itâs a brutal blow, as the Commanders wonât be able to replace Lattimore with just one player. Instead, theyâll try to fill their need with depth.
That starts with Hawkins, a former preseason darling who has yet to pan out. Hawkins played in all 17 games as a rookie in 2023, recording 35 tackles and one pass defended.
The following season, Hawkins recorded his first career interception in a Week 14 loss to the Saints. The interception was the Giantsâ first since Week 1, snapping an NFL-record 11-game drought. However, that was also the game in which Hawkins sustained a fractured lumbar spine, prematurely ending his season. He finished the season with 10 tackles and two passes defended in addition to the interception.
