It’s the end of an era at Oklahoma State University.
After 20 years at the helm, Mike Gundy was relieved of his duties as head coach at Oklahoma State on Tuesday, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.
On Monday, Gundy responded to what he described as “fair questions” about his future with the Cowboys, three days after Oklahoma State fell to 1-2 following a 19-12 loss to Tulsa on Friday night. The defeat marked the program’s first home loss to the Golden Hurricane since 1951. Oklahoma State has now lost 11 of its last 12 games dating back to the start of the 2024 season, including 11 straight defeats against FBS opponents—the longest such streak among Power 4 programs nationwide.
Last season, the Cowboys went 3-9 and 0-9 in conference play.
Two weeks after a 69-3 blowout loss at Oregon on Sept. 6, the Cowboys allowed 11 plays of 15 yards or more, managed just three trips to the red zone, and were outgained 424-403 by Tulsa—coming just six days after the Golden Hurricane had fallen 19 points to Navy in Week 3.

Gundy Faced Questions Monday About His Job
Gunday also told reporters Monday he wasn’t worried about job security or this being his final season in Stillwater.
“I’m under contract, here, for I think 3½ years,” Gundy said. “When I was hired here to take this job, ever since that day, I’ve put my heart and soul into this and I will continue to do that until at some point, if I say I don’t want to do it or if somebody else says we don’t want you to do it.”
Athletic director Chad Weiberg is also facing questions about his effectiveness.
Gundy will be owed $15 million by the university if the school moves to fire the 58-year-old coach without cause prior to the end of the 2025 season, according to ESPN.
“I’ll get people (with) text messages saying, ‘Man, you’ve done this all this time. You don’t need this. You don’t need that. What are you doing? Why are you doing this?’” Gundy said Monday. “It is still fun for me.”
17 Years Since Gundy Yelled ‘I’m a Man, I’m 40’
Monday was also the 17th anniversary of Gundy yelling “I’m a man, I’m 40” at a news conference in 2007. The rant came after a 49-45 victory over Texas Tech in response to a newspaper columnist’s article critical of the team’s quarterback.
He told reporters to “Come after me!” and “Write something about me, or our coaches” instead of attacking a player who “does everything right.”
The rant included the famous line, “I’m a man! I’m 40!” and other phrases like “That’s why I don’t read the newspaper, because it’s garbage.”
Gundy Has Lifelong Affiliation with Oklahoma State
Gundy, a Oklahoma native, played quarterback for Oklahoma State in the 1980s.
After graduating, Gundy joined the coaching staff in 1990 before leaving for stints at Baylor and Maryland. He returned to Oklahoma State in 2001 as assistant head coach and was promoted to head coach in January 2005.
Gundy has a career record of 170-90 overall and 102-72 in conference play. He led the Cowboys to a Big 12 championship in 2011 and was named Big 12 coach of the year three times, including just two years ago when Oklahoma State went 10-4.
