Cowboys Make Unfortunate NFL History Not Seen in 26 Years

The Dallas Cowboys have enjoyed some early-season success, as well as some failures. On paper, most expected the Cowboys’ defense to be one of the worst in the NFL. However, to say that the Cowboys’ defense has been even worse would be an understatement, as this team hasn’t done anything right on that side of the football.

The Cowboys are fortunate that quarterback Dak Prescott is playing at the level he has, performing like an MVP. He’s gone for 1,617 yards, 13 touchdowns, and just three interceptions. As of now, there’s a chance that Prescott could walk away with the MVP award if the Cowboys start to win more games.

However, other statistics suggest that the Cowboys’ defense may not have a chance to turn things around, and the latest one was highlighted by The Athletic’s Mike Sando, who revealed just how dire the situation really is.

“Cowboys owner Jerry Jones justified the preseason trade of pass rusher Micah Parsons partly because he thought getting defensive tackle Kenny Clark in return from Green Bay would help the run defense. But of the 44 teams since 2000 to average at least 29 points per game on offense through the first six games of a season, Dallas is the only one to allow 850 yards rushing (597.1 is the average).

“That is an unlikely combination because, in general, teams that score so much on offense have the lead, forcing teams into passing situations to keep pace. Dallas is one of three teams on that 44-team list with a negative point differential,” he wrote.

Cowboys’ Kenny Clark Shares Frustration

When the Dallas Cowboys traded for Kenny Clark, a deal involving Micah Parsons, which still doesn’t make sense, the hope was for him to be a positive on the defensive side of the football. To put all the blame on Clark would be unfair, but he needs to be a bit better in the run game.

“Anytime somebody’s running the ball like that, it’s definitely frustrating,” Clark said, per the team. “We’re all competitors and want to put our best foot out there. So anytime something like that happens, it’s frustrating.”

Cowboys Are Making Concerning Comments

Regarding what Clark has seen on the defensive side of things for the Dallas Cowboys, he believes the details haven’t been followed. That’s concerning to hear, six weeks into the season, but it’s the reality for the Cowboys right now.

“Just the details of the defense,” Clark said of what Eberflus’ message was to his unit. “We went through everything. Holding each other accountable and focusing on the details of what we need to do. Everybody’s just looking in the mirror and figuring that stuff out.”

When discussing how he plans to address that, he wasn’t sure, which is a bigger concern than perhaps anything else so far.

“Honestly, I’m not sure,” Clark said. “That’s a good question. That’s the biggest question of them all. It’s just us holding each other accountable and just getting to the bottom of that. We can’t go all year playing defense like this, especially with how our offense is playing. If we can match that, we’re going to be a really tough team to beat.”
