Golf fans attending this week’s Ryder Cup were left dismayed after discovering the eye-watering price they will have to pay for a beer on-site.

Fans have flocked to Bethpage Black in New York this week as Europe look to retain their title after a thumping victory over Team USA in Rome two years ago.

Luke Donald’s side are looking to become only the fifth European team to win a Ryder Cup on away soil, and they will have to improve greatly on their previous effort in 2021 which saw them lose by a record 19-9 margin.

Covid-19 restrictions prevented any European fans from making the trip to Whistling Straits in 2021, but the visitors are set to be backed by a strong contigent of travelling fans this time around.

However, those fans making the trip acrosss the pond, as well as the home fans in attendance, have been dealt a hammer blow before the tournament has even began after discovering the cost of alcohol at the event.

Pictures from inside the course show that the cheapest beers, a 16oz (473ml) Michelob Ultra or Bud Light will cost a remarkable $15 (£11.10).

A 16oz Bud Light Seltzer will cost even more at $16 (£11.84), while a 19.2oz Premier Beer – the same size as a regular pint in the UK – will set a fan back a whopping $19 (£14.06).

The cost of wine and cocktails are no better, ranging from $14 (£10.36) for a glass of chardonnay to $19.50 (£14.43) for a vodka-infused cocktail.

Whatsmore, all prices will then be subject to sales taxes of around 8 per cent, with tips quite possibly expected on top of that.

And fans, quite rightly, were left fuming at the costs on social media.

‘That’s criminal!’ one fan wrote, while another punter joked: ‘Makes Cheltenham look an absolute bargain.’

A third fuming spectator added: ‘Looks like I’m going thirsty.’

‘£11 for not even a pint is shameful,’ a fourth said.

Along with the price of the alcohol, fans have had to fork out huge sums of money just to attend the event, with ticets for each day of the competition costing staggering $750 (£555).

And while that ticket allows free food and soft drinks throughout the day, beer and other alchohol are not included.

Despite those costs, over 250,000 fans are expected to be in attendance during the course of the week.

And that figure will include President Donald Trump, who is expected to be on-site for the Friday’s opening day of action.
