The Detroit Lions have a solid team going into the 2025-26 season, but it’s not perfect. There are some weaknesses in their lineup, and those have become more apparent during the preseason. Notably, the Detroit Lions don’t have the most solid roster of backup quarterbacks to step in if Jared Goff gets injured.
The Lions’ quarterback situation means that the team is going to have to work even harder to protect Goff on the field. If he’s injured seriously, the season may very well be over for the Lions. Thankfully, Goff was one of the only Lions who didn’t get seriously injured during the season, but that luck could always run out.
Now, the Detroit Lions are going to need to pick a quarterback No. 2 and stick with him. So far, backup quarterbacks Hendon Hooker and Kyle Allen have not performed super well in the preseason. But, one has been doing better than the other, and Campbell is hinting at who he’s favoring to take over at quarterback No. 2.
Detroit Lions Q2 From Dan Campbell

GettyDan Campbell of the Detroit Lions looks on during a game.
After the Detroit Lions’ preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons, Campbell talked about some of the performance son the field. He said that he was very happy with how Allen handled his responsibilities on the field..
“I thought Kyle (Allen) played really well. I was fired up. It was outstanding,” Campbell said about the Falcons matchup. “He wasn’t going to play until the second half and we get him in there. It’s kind of like, ‘Hey, you’re up.’ ‘I got to be ready to go now?’”
Campbell added, “He gets out there and immediately gives us a boost. Runs the offense, makes two huge throws on the first drive. I thought he was on point with the checks, the kills, motion landmarks, the whole thing. He operated the offense at a high level and made big throws. So, I was fired up.”
So, while it’s too early to say that Campbell will definitely make Allen his second guy, but it’s sure a sign that it’s trending to that direction.
Lions Backup QB Talks About His Performance With the Team
Allen is also speaking out about how he has grown during his short amount of time with the Lions.
“I do feel really good about it,” he said in a postgame press conference. “It’s a high volume offense, so it’s taken a lot of work, a lot of studying, but I feel like I’m at a really good point with it and it’s at a good point where I feel in control.”
He added, “I feel like I know what I’m doing out there. I think it just takes time to learn an offense and to find your comfort in it regardless.”
Allen also has experience on his side. In the NFL, he has played in 31 games with 19 career starts. While that’s impressive, Allen’s preseason performance still hasn’t really reflected someone with that kind of experience. Hopefully it’s just growing pains or early season nerves, because chances are the Lions will call on Allen at some point during the season.
