Dan Campbell Stirs Up Ref Controversy From Lions-Chiefs Game

The Detroit Lions and Kansas City Chiefs played their hearts out during Sunday Night Football on Sunday, October 12, and unfortunately for the Motor City, it didn’t end well. Let’s just say that that Detroit would like to forget about that game, but, of course, it’s still fresh in our minds. In the end, the Lions lost to the Chiefs with a 17-30 final score, and there were certainly some hard feelings from the Lions’ camp after the clock went down to zero.

After the game, the big story was a fight that broke out on the field. That wasn’t just any fight. This was a really intense one. It stood out form other fights, and not in a good way. Right after the game, Detroit Lions player Brian Branch appeared to snub Mahomes and hit Chiefs player Juju Smith-Schuster. Following the matchup, Mahomes told the press, “We play the game in between the whistles. They can do all the extracurricular stuff they want to do, but we play the game in between the whistles. And we thought we played a great game today, and we’ll keep this momentum moving forward.”

Branch has Been suspended one game. But, if he was frustrated about the lack of calls on the Chiefs, he’s not alone. Now, Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell has revealed some news that is raising a few eyebrows across the NFL.

Dan Campbell Talks Ref Situation for Detroit Lions vs. Kansas City Chiefs

Early in the game, Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff had a situation that’s difficult to forget. Goff made a scoring touchdown, but it was called back by the game’s referees after saying that Goff and the Lions offense had not executed their trick play properly. The flag on that play came really late, too, making it even more confusing and, frankly, frustrating. There’s no way the Lions would have done a trick play not knowing the rules, right?

Campbell opened that little can of worms up during his Wednesday, October 15, radio appearance on 97.1 FM The Ticket. On the call, the Metallica enthusiast said what we he was told is that the league office in New York City had told the crew on the ground that the touchdown needed to be overturned. But, Craig Wrolstad, the head referee in the game, told reporters after the game that they didn’t get any call from the New York office on reversing the touchdown. Does that seem sus to you?

It’s something worth thinking about, but, of course, in football and any sport, there will always be bad calls on both sides. The trick is to overcome those barriers, even if it’s not fair. Now, even if Week 6 is still on the minds of the Detroit Lions, the team has to look ahead to their matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 7.

Detroit Lions Player Sounds Off

At least one Detroit Lions player wasn’t happy about the refs during the Chiefs game and made his thoughts clear. Kerby Joseph took to social media after the game, and shared on his X account a reaction image showing that he was pretty unhappy with how this almost incompletion from Travis Kelce was still ruled a catch. In another post on X, he reacted to Kelce not getting called for what appeared to be a hold as the Chiefs moved to make a first down. Joseph also shared a photo of Mahomes during the game chatting with a ref.

At least the Lions have that matchup with the Chiefs over. The Chiefs were 2-3 going into the game, and it seems like no matter what, they weren’t going to leave that field 2-4.
