One of the first major moves that the Detroit Lions announced once their 2025 season came to a disappointing close without a berth in the NFL postseason was the termination of offensive coordinator John Morton after only one official year on the job.
The move wasn’t exactly surprising to most, considering that Morton had his play calling duties stripped away by head coach Dan Campbell midway through the campaign.
In Morton’s stead, the Lions hired former Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator Drew Petzing, a move that drew some skepticism from fans who weren’t completely familiar with his body of work.
However, Petzing already has a key backer in Lions running back David Montgomery, who recently described his first interaction with the new Detroit offensive coordinator as a positive one that will pay dividends.
“I talked to him briefly,” Montgomery said of Petzing. “It’s pretty evident that he knows exactly what has to happen, and he’s prepared for the task at hand, so it will be good to see what he implements in our offense and how we can improve.”

Detroit Lions GM Brad Holmes Was Candid About David Montgomery’s Future In Detroit
Following the season, Lions general manager Brad Holmes was rather direct when it came to discussing the future of Montgomery with the club while also referencing the dropoff in total touches.
“Obviously, I know it was a tough year for him in terms of the lack of touches,” Holmes said. “I’m not going to say I went into it planning for it to be that way. So, those are discussions that we’re going to have to have a lot more depth in terms of, what’s the best plan for him moving forward. Is that somewhere else, or whatever the case may be.”
While he couldn’t guarantee that Montgomery would remain with the Lions, Holmes affirmed the organization’s love and appreciation for what he’s done for them.
“I really appreciate everything he’s done for us if it does go that way, but I hope it doesn’t,” he said. “We love David Montgomery. Those are conversations we’re gonna have, I have a lot of respect for that player.”
Montgomery played in 17 games for the first time in his NFL career, and while he amassed 716 yards and eight touchdowns, his total touches dropped by 59 compared to the 2024 NFL season.

What Does The Future Hold For David Montgomery?
Ben Raven and Kory Woods, a pair of Detroit Lions Insiders on the Dungeon of Doom podcast via MLive, expressed optimism that Montgomery could ultimately stick around in Detroit.
“I said it when Petzing got hired. I do like to hear David talking about that, because if I were Drew Petzing, I’d be like, ‘Hey, screw trading David Montgomery, you’re not going to get enough for him anyway. He’s going to do more here,’” Raven said on the podcast. “Like, seriously, David Montgomery’s extension has not kicked in yet. He is under full team control. The Lions should not, and this is me talking — nor should they move him.”
