Dawn Staley Gets Apology From Geno Auriemma After Lisa Leslie Called Him Out

Geno Auriemma issued a public apology following his postgame exchange with Dawn Staley, a development that comes after Lisa Leslie had called for accountability in the immediate aftermath of the NCAA Final Four matchup.

Leslie, a former USC standout and WNBA Hall of Famer, was among the prominent voices to respond after the South Carolina Gamecocks women’s basketball defeated the UConn Huskies women’s basketball 62–48, a game that ended with a visible exchange between the two coaches.

“Geno needs to start with an apology,” Leslie wrote on social media following the game.

Geno Auriemma Issues Apology After Final Four Loss

Auriemma addressed the situation in a statement released by UConn, acknowledging his actions during the closing moments of the game.

“There’s no excuse for how I handled the end of the game vs. South Carolina,” Auriemma said. “It’s unlike what I do and what our standard is here at Connecticut.”

He directed his apology to South Carolina’s staff and players.

“I want to apologize to the staff and the team at South Carolina,” he said. “It was uncalled for in how I reacted.”

Auriemma also emphasized that the focus should remain on South Carolina’s performance.

“The story should be how well South Carolina played, and I don’t want my actions to detract from that,” he added.

Lisa Leslie Called for Accountability After Exchange

Leslie’s response came shortly after the final buzzer, when the exchange between Auriemma and Staley became a focal point of postgame coverage.

The former USC star, widely regarded as one of the most accomplished players in women’s basketball history, praised South Carolina’s performance while questioning Auriemma’s reaction.

“We have all had to lose with class,” Leslie wrote. “It’s a real shame that Geno took the low road.”

Her comments added a prominent voice to the reaction surrounding the incident.

Exchange With Dawn Staley Followed Pregame Dispute

The interaction between Auriemma and Dawn Staley occurred in the final seconds of the game, with assistant coaches and officials stepping in as the situation developed.

After the game, Auriemma said his comments were tied to what he described as a pregame issue involving standard coaching protocol.

“For 41 years I’ve been coaching, 25 Final Fours, and before the game, the protocol is you meet at halfcourt,” Auriemma said. “I waited there for like three minutes.”

He added that he addressed the matter directly after the game.

“I said what I said, and obviously she didn’t like it,” Auriemma said.

Broadcast footage, however, showed Staley greeting Auriemma and members of the UConn program before tipoff.

Staley said she was unaware of any issue.

“I have no idea,” Staley said. “If I did something wrong, I had no idea what I did.”

UConn Loss Included Officiating Frustration

Auriemma had also expressed frustration during the game regarding officiating.

During a third-quarter broadcast interview, he pointed to a foul disparity and referenced a sequence involving Sarah Strong.

“There were six fouls called that quarter — all of them against us… I got a kid with a ripped jersey, and they go, ‘I didn’t see it.’”

Following the game, Strong clarified that she tore her own jersey in frustration after missing a shot.

“It was an accident,” she said.“I missed my shot. I ripped it.”

South Carolina Advances to Championship Game

South Carolina’s defensive performance played a key role in the outcome.

The Gamecocks held UConn to 31% shooting and controlled the boards with a 47–32 rebounding advantage.

Strong and Azzi Fudd combined to shoot 7-of-31, as South Carolina gradually extended its lead in the second half.

The win snapped UConn’s 54-game winning streak and advanced South Carolina to the national championship game.

Apology Follows Widespread Reaction

Auriemma’s statement addressed a sequence that included in-game frustration, a postgame exchange and reactions from figures across the sport.

Leslie’s earlier comments reflected the broader attention surrounding the moment, as the Final Four matchup extended beyond the result on the court.
