Details of Luka Doncic’s New Lakers Contract Leaked: Report

Superstar guard Luka Doncic and the Los Angeles Lakers have agreed to terms on a four-year, $229 million contract, according to a Slovenian outlet.

SportKlub reported on July 24 that Doncic and the Lakers will put pen to paper on August 2, when the two sides will be eligible to agree to an extension.

Doncic will fly to Slovenia on August 4 for the EuroBasket tournament after finishing his obligations with the Lakers, according to national coach Aleksander Sekulic.

Slovenian national team director Matej Likar also confirmed that Doncic will join his countrymen after inking a new deal with the Lakers.

“When he arrives, I will probably have to stand in line to arrange the last detail,” Likar told SportKlub. “Yes, everything is ready. Above all, it is worth emphasizing that Doncic’s playing for the national team was never in question. The coach told you when he will join us. I can only confirm that everything is going according to plan.”

Lakers Fans Can Rejoice

The EuroBasket, co-hosted by Cyprus,  Finland, Poland and Latvia, will take place between August 27 and September 14. NBA rules permit players to spend a maximum of 28 days with their national team. As such, Doncic will be shortening his stay with the Slovenian squad, per multiple reports.

Furthermore, the Lakers will be sending one of their assistant coaches to oversee Doncic’s preparation and recovery at the global event.

All these reports bode well for the long-term partnership between Doncic and the Lakers. On July 23, ESPN’s Dave McMenamin noted that Lakers fans had reason to rejoice as Doncic was on the verge of signing a new deal with the franchise.

If the Slovenian outlet’s report is legitimate, the Lakers have essentially secured their new franchise star for the long term. It was previously speculated that Doncic would sign a three-year deal, allowing him to become a free agent in 2028.

Lakers Enter Luka Doncic Era

Doncic also had the option of waiting until the summer of 2026 to sign a five-year, $295 million deal, or even hit the free agency market next summer. ESPN’s Bobby Marks had predicted Doncic to take the safer route of a three-year contract.

“More likely: a three-year, $165 million extension that includes a player option in the third year. The short-term extension allows Doncic to reenter free agency sooner and potentially recoup the $345 million he lost when he was traded from the Mavericks,” ESPN’s Marks wrote in his offseason guide for the Lakers.

Doncic’s commitment to the Lakers has been on full display this offseason. According to multiple insiders, the Slovenian was hands-on in recruiting DeAndre Ayton and Marcus Smart to the Lakers. The latter confirmed the reports in his introductory presser.

“There’s a lot of reasons [why I chose the Lakers], but the main one is being able to play with Luka and LeBron, two of the best to do it in this game, two greats with greatest basketball IQs that l’ve ever seen in this era,” Smart said.

“And when you get a guy like Luka calling, referencing, checking on you, trying to see where you at to see if you want to come and join something special that he’s trying to cook up over here. And for him to say that he can really use my help, that meant a lot.”
