The NFL season is in full swing, and the Detroit Lions got their first taste of the 2025-26 season with a loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, September 7. While the Lions have some issues that they’re going to have to work on to get better, other teams in the NFL are already dealing with injuries to key players, so at least the Lions aren’t there yet.
One of the teams having to figure out what to do amid injuries is the San Francisco 49ers. Their star quarterback Brock Purdy appeared in Week 1, but he’s dealing with a few injuries that are likely to keep him on the sidelines for the next few games. It’s not looking good for Purdy, and according to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, the signal-caller is probably going to be out for anywhere from two to five weeks with a turf toe variant.
So, what’s a team to do? The 49ers may have to call up some new quarterbacks to cover for Purdy, and one of those is being predicted to come from the Detroit Lions.
Detroit Lions Quarterback May Head to San Francisco
It’s difficult to prepare for a franchise quarterback being out, and the 49ers don’t have a big quarterback room. They’ll have Mac Jones fill for Purdy while he’s out, but they could use more talent.
That’s where Detroit Lions quarterback C.J. Beathard comes into play. He’s on the Lions’ practice squad, and some thing he would make a perfect fit for the 49ers.
Someone who thinks Beathard should head to San Francisco is The Athletic’s Matt Barrows. In a Wednesday, September 10 feature, he discusses the 49ers’ quarterback situation and a possible solution.
“I would think the 49ers have to bring in someone with more experience, preferably in the Kyle Shanahan offense,” Barrows stated in the piece. “C.J. Beathard is on the Detroit Lions’ practice squad. The 49ers have already brought back 2017 acquisitions Robert Saleh and Kendrick Bourne. Why not do the same with Beathard?”
Even though Beathard is on the Detroit Lions’ roster right now, he started his NFL career with the 49ers. He was with the franchise from 2017 through 2020, so he’s a familiar face.
Detroit Lions Prepare for Chicago Bears at Ford Field
Meanwhile, the Lions are getting ready for their high-profile matchup against the Chicago Bears on Sunday, September 14, at Ford Field. It’s a big test, because it’s their first game against former offensive coordinator Ben Johnson.
“We’re going in and getting ready to play Chicago. We’re going to win this game,” Campbell said in a conference on Monday, September 8. “We have to. We have to find a way to clean things up and do what we got to do. And they’re going to try to do the same thing, just like every week.”
It’s going to be an intense game between the Lions and Bears, for certain. There’s already been a lot of build up around these two teams finally coming together, and fireworks will be going off the whole time.
