Doctors Explain Luka Dončić’s Spain Treatment as Lakers Await Playoff Timeline

The Los Angeles Lakers are still awaiting clarity on Luka Dončić’s recovery timeline, but new insight from medical experts is helping explain why the star guard traveled to Spain for treatment on his injured hamstring.

After reports surfaced that Dončić underwent an injection procedure in Europe to address a Grade 2 hamstring strain, questions quickly followed about why such treatment would take place overseas rather than in the United States.

Two U.S.-based medical professionals offered a perspective on that decision, pointing to differences in how certain treatments are regulated and administered.

Doctors Explain Differences Between U.S. and European Treatment Regulations

Dr. Evan Jeffries, a Doctor of Physical Therapy and injury analyst, noted that while similar therapies exist in the United States, they are subject to stricter oversight.

“The USA has stem cells, but it is heavily regulated by the FDA,” Jeffries explained on X. “The difference in Europe is that there are less regulations and the stem cells can be highly ‘manipulated,’ which can improve its potency.”

Jeffries added that Dončić’s decision to seek treatment overseas likely reflects access to options not readily available domestically.

“Likely means he is getting treatment that is not offered in USA,” Jeffries wrote.

Dr. Nirav Pandya, a professor of orthopedic surgery at the University of California, San Francisco, echoed that point.

“In Europe, the regulations for various ‘orthobiologic’ treatments such as injections are not as stringent, so they can be more easily performed,” Pandya wrote.

What Luka Dončić’s Spain Treatment Could Mean for Recovery Timeline

Dončić’s injury — a Grade 2 hamstring strain — typically carries a recovery timeline of four to six weeks, which would likely sideline him for the start of the playoffs.

Jeffries noted that, in theory, alternative treatment approaches could potentially accelerate that process.

“If this cuts his healing time in half (4–6 weeks), theoretically he could be back in 2–3 weeks in time for the first round of the playoffs,” Jeffries wrote.

However, that possibility remains speculative, and there is no guarantee that the treatment will significantly alter the standard recovery timeline.

Medical experts generally caution that hamstring injuries, particularly partial tears, require careful management to avoid setbacks or reinjury — especially when timelines are shortened.

Lakers Playoff Outlook Hinges on Luka Dončić Injury Timeline

The Lakers are navigating a critical stretch of the season without one of their primary offensive engines. Dončić is averaging 33.5 points, 8.3 assists and 7.7 rebounds in 64 games this season.

Los Angeles sits at 50-28, tied for the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference with only a handful of games remaining, making every game crucial in determining playoff positioning.

Securing a top-four seed would guarantee home-court advantage in the first round, while a drop in the standings could result in a more difficult postseason path.

Any potential acceleration in Dončić’s recovery timeline could significantly impact the Lakers’ chances of making a deep playoff run.

Lakers Await Clarity as Treatment Outcome Remains Uncertain

For now, the Lakers are awaiting further updates on Dončić’s condition and how he responds to the treatment he received in Spain.

While the decision to pursue treatment overseas highlights the urgency of the situation, the outcome remains uncertain.

Teams and players often explore every available option during the postseason push, but recovery timelines — particularly for soft-tissue injuries — can be difficult to predict.

Until more information becomes available, the Lakers will continue to balance optimism with caution as they monitor Dončić’s progress heading into the playoffs.
