Dodgers Trade Away Speedy OF in Deal to Add 18-Year-Old Prospect

The Los Angeles Dodgers have been quiet in recent weeks since signing pitcher Edwin Diaz. As long as big names like Kyle Tucker remain unsigned and Tarik Skubal remain untraded, the team is going to continue to be involved in free agent and trade rumors.

However, the Dodgers aren’t going to stand by and stop making moves while they wait to see how those situations play out. Los Angeles announced that they have traded outfielder Esteury Ruiz to the Miami Marlins in exchange for 18-year-old right-handed pitcher Adriano Marrero.

Ruiz played in 19 games for the Dodgers last season, batting .190. He came to Los Angeles early in the season after the team acquired him from the Oakland Athletics. He finished the season in the minor leagues and was not part of the playoff roster.

Previously, Ruiz led the AL in stolen bases for the 2023 season when he was with the Athletics. The 67 bases he stole in 2023 are the only time he has had more than five stolen bases in a season at the MLB level.

Marrero is only 18, so he hasn’t many chances to show what he can do yet. He had a 3.82 ERA in 2025 in the Dominican Summer League. It will likely be a while before he gets a chance to play for the Dodgers.

Dodgers Earn ‘A’ For Diaz Signing

The Dodgers haven’t been as splashy this offseason, but they have made one of the best signings so far. The team’s biggest need after winning the World Series was finding a high-end closer.

Well, they were able to land arguably the best in MLB when they signed Diaz to a three-year deal. The Dodgers received an “A” grade from ESPN’s Bradford Doolittle for the signing.

“You have to wonder how many teams could have landed Diaz on a three-year deal,” Doolittle wrote. “Surely some were willing to go to four years at least, perhaps at a lower AAV but with more overall value. But this is what the Dodgers have become — a destination. And their uniforms — not to mention the super-swag championship rings that go with them — are becoming status symbols among baseball’s elite in the way that super-yachts have become the darlings of the mega-wealthy.

“The Dodgers, already a definitive favorite to win a third straight World Series, have solidified that status by a few more percentage points. And all it cost them was money, a resource that for them has become all but irrelevant. That is increasingly what puts the Dodgers on the hilltop, and makes the climb for everyone else that much more difficult to complete.”

What Move Could be Next?

The Dodgers are always lurking when there are big names available. Chicago Cubs outfielder Kyle Tucker is the most notable name to watch, as he’s a free agent. The Dodgers could sign him to a contract at any moment.

In terms of players the Dodgers could move on from, outfielder Teoscar Hernandez is a player to watch. There are rumors that Los Angeles could consider trading him after a lackluster season.

Detroit Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal is also on the team’s radar, but it’s going to take a lot to trade for him.
