The Miami Dolphins did not escape preseason unscathed. Over the course of training camp, the Phins lost a total of eight players for the season. This list includes at least three presumed role player in Alexander Mattison, Artie Burns, and Kader Kohou.
The injuries don’t top there as the last few weeks were not kind to Miami’s roster. Most recently, long time kicker Jason Sanders came up lame on a kick attempt during warm ups. He returned to the locker room shortly after and did not play in the final preseason game of the year. Instead punter Jake Bailey handled kick off duties and even attempted a long 51-yard field goal.
There has been no update made public about the status of Sanders, but head coach Mike McDaniel provided an update after Saturday night’s game.
“It was something that he doesn’t appear concerned for Week 1,” McDaniel said. “He was telling me that he was going to kick extra points and I was like we need the 2-point conversion work. We’ll see when he comes in but he wasn’t overly concerned for Week 1.”
Tyreek Hill Hasn’t Practiced In Weeks
This has been the quietest stretch of Tyreek Hill news since he arrived in South Beach. Regrettably, that is because the super star wide receiver hasn’t stepped foot on the practice field since August 7th.
At the time of the injury, McDaniel told reporters that it was an oblique injury that was getting worse with every rep he took. This injury kept him sidelined for all three preseason games, meaning if he is healthy Week 1 it will be his first competitive snap of football in eight months.
Also worth noting, he spent the offseason rehabbing a wrist surgery. So it has been far from the sort of rest and recovery you’d want from your best player.
As far as we know, Hill is supposed to be healthy come September 7th. But I have combed through every report coming out of the state of Florida and found very few substantial updates.
Jaylen Wright Might Start The Season On The IR
Running back Jaylen Wright might start the season on the IR if the troubling injury news rings true.
The second year back, who saw 68 carries as a rookie, was slated to become the team’s running back “1A” in the new year. However, he was seen limping off the field late in Thursday’s joint session with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He did not return to practice and instead was seen with a compression sleeve on his leg and crutches under his arm at Saturday’s game.
SI’s Alain Poupart warns the back could start the season with a serious injury designation.
“McDaniel said after the game that ‘we’re kind of evaluating a couple of options procedurally’ and called Wright ‘week to week.’” Poupart reports. “This doesn’t sound great when it comes to Wright being available for the Colts game, and it also brings up the idea that maybe Wright will start the season on IR. As a reminder, the IR rules give the Dolphins the chance to designate two players at the cuts to 53 to return from IR and they don’t count against the 53…”
