Dolphins Face High-Stakes Season, Tua’s Future In Limbo

The Miami Dolphins have been at the height of the NFL media in recent weeks. After a forgettable 2024 season, all eyes turn to the most pivotal season in recent memory in South Florida.

As Dolphins’ training camp looms on the horizon, the pressure remains hot in Miami.

With a retooled roster and surprising offseason moves, the Dolphins need a bounce-back year.

The upcoming season in Miami could determine the future of not only QB Tua Tagovailoa, but for HC Mike McDaniel and GM Chris Grier.

Tagovailoa’s Future In Limbo

Tua Tagovailoa is entering his sixth season with the Dolphins and will have everything to prove—again.

As soon as Tagovailoa went down with another head injury, the Dolphins’ season quickly started to dim.

Moreover, the injury history of the Dolphins quarterback continues to linger.

If Tagovailoa is unable to regain his past form, the Dolphins could start to flirt with the idea of moving on from their QB and hitting the reset button.

In a recent feature for the Athletic, Senior NFL Editor Jim Ayello put it bluntly:

“There’s a world where this is Tagovailoa’s final season in Miami”.

In addition, Ayello mentions that moving on from Tagovailoa is unlikely. However with the Dolphins carrying a heavy cap, a hard reset could be in the works.

“To be clear, the odds of the Dolphins moving on after this season are remote (it’s far more likely after 2026), but it’s maybe not as crazy as you think. Imagine if the up-against-the-cap Dolphins struggle to a five- or six-win 2025 season. Ownership decides it’s time for a hard reset, and the new GM and coach don’t see Tagovailoa, with his concussion history and limitations as a pocket passer, as a franchise QB.”

This reality may be closer to the Dolphins despite what the Miami faithful think.

Having only played a full 17-game season once in his career, Tagovailoa needs to come out the gate fighting, with the hopes of re-discovering his passing magic.

The Dolphins QB narrative is closely tied to wins, health and perhaps most importantly, a playoff birth.

Dolphins’ Offseason Reflects Team On Edge

While the future of Tua Tagovailoa as the Dolphins’ quarterback remains a point of emphasis, the surrounding organization has continued to reshape the roster for better or worse.

Miami stunned the NFL world with their most recent blockbuster trade headline.

Jalen Ramsey and Jonnu Smith were traded to the Steelers in exchange for Minkah Fitzpatrick.

To fill the void that Smith had left, the Dolphins went out and landed TE Darren Waller.

Hoping Waller stays healthy and can still play at a high level, it is pivotal he can become a reliable third option behind Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle.

With the Dolphins rumored to keep Tyreek Hill in the fold, the Dolphins need explosiveness and consistency on offense.

Furthermore, HC Mike McDaniel and GM Chris Grier know it, too.

If Miami fails to make the playoffs this season, both McDaniel and Grier may not survive the fallout.

The 2025 season isn’t just about Tagovailoa’s future, it’s about a franchise top to bottom looking for answers.

There is no hiding in the NFL, and the Dolphins will need not only Tagovailoa to win, but the team surrounding him to follow.
