Dolphins Touted As Top Contenders To Trade For Browns QB

The Miami Dolphins‘ season took a new low last weekend, when the franchise dropped to 1-6 after getting hammered by the lowly Cleveland Browns.

Amidst what has been an underwhelming year for quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa, who has thrown 6 interceptions over the past two games against the Browns and the Los Angeles Chargers, questions have started to creep up about what the Dolphins’ future will look like at quarterback.

It would seem unlikely that either former #2 overall pick by the New York Jets, Zach Wilson, or rookie seventh rounder, Quinn Ewers, could take over the reins at the position in the coming year or two, but there may be other talents in the league worth looking at.

And, according to Sports Illustrated’s Angela Miele, a trade for Cleveland QB, Shedeur Sanders, could make significant sense for both the player and Miami.

Miele presents the Dolphins as one of three teams that could look to make a deal for the former Colorado Buffalo, along with the Jets and Las Vegas Raiders.

Browns Could Be Willing To Move Shedeur Sanders

“[Alongside the Jets] Other teams to watch for are the Las Vegas Raiders and Miami Dolphins, who could look for a change or a possible future starter.” Miele wrote on Friday.

“Through seven games, Sanders has not seen the field during the regular-season. The former Colorado star is working in practice, and it was recently reported that Sanders is developing at a quick rate. The issue is the lack of playing time, and there is no guarantee he will get game snaps with the Browns this year.”

“Trading Sanders could be what the former Colorado star needs to see the field. As the Browns see what they have in Gabriel, Sanders is still waiting for his opportunity to play.”

This tracks with what was reported by ESPN Cleveland, which stated that fellow SI writer, Albert Breer, reported that Sanders could be moved ahead of the trade deadline.

“Albert Breer wrote today, and he thinks there is a possibility that the Browns could deal Shedeur Sanders before the deadline,” was said by ESPN Cleveland on Friday.

Would Sanders Make Sense For The Dolphins?

Right now, a trade for such a high profile player – one that many still have strong convictions about, with regard to his ability to eventually become a starting quarterback in the NFL – would certainly raise eyebrows.

It would, in effect, be telling Tua that the team is actively looking for new options and potential replacements for him, looking down the line.

The problem for Miami is that the former Alabama product is essentially un-cuttable prior to 2027; if they decide to move off him next year, they will incur a massive $99 million dead cap hit, compared to a large but more reasonable $31.8 million dead cap if they release him in 2027.

Sanders is also not a proven quarterback in the league, and may simply function as upgraded Tagovailoa insurance in case of another injury to the QB, who has struggled to stay healthy over the course of his career in the pros.

Irregardless, the way things are looking, a new quarterback could be starting under center for the Dolphins sooner rather than later.
