Dolphins’ Tyreek Hill Takes Major Shot at Bills Defense

There’s no mistaking it. Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill fired a major diss at one of his division rivals — the Buffalo Bills — while on stage at Fanatics Fest in New York City on Saturday.

Hill’s insult stemmed from the type of pass coverages the Bills have deployed against Hill and the Dolphins in recent seasons.

“Whenever we play the Bills, those guys typically play Cover Four because they’re a bunch of [expletive],” said Hill, via NFL reporter Arye Pulli.

A Cover 4 defense keeps four defensive backs deep in the secondary, usually in a soft zone shell. The objective of the defense is to avoid getting beat on deep passes.

Defenses will most often use the strategy against offenses with a lot of speed, which the Dolphins have at receiver.

Some NFL strategists would consider the Cover 4 a smart system against offenses such as Miami’s. But it’s also a conservative defense and some fans will see it as an admission from a defense that it cannot stop an opposing offense’s receivers in man-to-man coverage.

Clearly, Hill shares the latter opinion.

Bills Defense Against Tyreek Hill & Dolphins

Fantasy Points Data responded to Pulli’s tweet, writing that Hill wasn’t inaccurate about his assessment with the Bills typically playing soft deep zone coverages versus the Dolphins.

According to Fantasy Points Data, Buffalo used two-high coverage on 73% of its defensive snaps versus the Dolphins in 2024. Against all other teams combined, the Bills utilized two-high coverages on just 52.7% of its defensive snaps.

It’s also hard to argue against Buffalo’s success versus Miami. The Bills held the Dolphins to an average of 18.5 points per game in two matchups last season. Buffalo won both contests.

In the two games combined, Hill posted seven catches for 104 yards.

The Bills have now won six straight versus the Dolphins. During that Buffalo winning streak, Miami has averaged under 22 points per game.

In the Miami losing streak, Hill has reached 80 receiving yards just twice. But in only one of those games did Hill average more than 12 yards per reception.

Hill Trying to Recapture His Magic Against Bills

Buffalo was arguably a rival of Hill’s prior to his arrival in Miami. With the Kansas City Chiefs for six seasons, Hill faced Buffalo five times, including twice in the postseason.

The Bills held Hill in check during the regular season matchups versus the Chiefs. However, Hill had nine catches for 172 yards in the 2021 AFC Championship against Buffalo. Then, he had 11 receptions for 150 yards and a touchdown in the teams’ epic 2022 AFC divisional round showdown.

Kansas City won both games. The Chiefs went 3-2 versus the Bills with Hill on the roster.

For the Dolphins to seriously compete for a championship, they will have to experience more success against Buffalo. To do that, Hill will likely have to be more productive versus the Bills, even against a Cover 4 scheme.

That is unless Buffalo deploys different coverages when the two teams renew their rivalry this fall. That’s not likely, but maybe with his comments, Hill is bating the Bills to “man up” and cover him and the other Dolphins receivers in more man-to-man situations during 2025.

Or maybe Hill just doesn’t like the Bills. This wasn’t his first insult sent toward Buffalo this offseason.

“It’s f*** the Bills all day, all they wanna do is jump through f***ing tables cus they got f***ing CTE… Stupid a** fans…,” Hill said in a social media video in late May. “The fans are stupid as hell.”
