Donald Trump has been accused of ‘ruining’ Chelsea’s Club World Cup trophy presentation.

The US President was heavily involved in the trophy presentation at the iconic MetLife Stadium in New Jersey but not everyone appreciated his input.

Chelsea stunned Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain in Sunday’s final to win the first edition of the newly expanded Club World Cup.

PSG were the heavy favourites going into the match following their brilliant 2024-25 campaign and their impressive run to the Club World Cup final.

The European champions beat German giants Bayern Munich and Spanish heavyweights Real Madrid in the knockout stages of the controversial tournament.

But Luis Enrique’s team were blown away by a Chelsea side that finished just fourth in the Premier League last season.

England star Cole Palmer scored a quickfire brace and Joao Pedro, who only joined Chelsea two weeks ago, added a third on the stroke of half-time.

PSG grew increasingly frustrated as the match slipped away, losing Joao Neves to a red card late on before a shocking on-pitch brawl involving manager Enrique erupted after full time.

Once those involved calmed down, the trophy presentation began and saw President Trump and FIFA chief Gianni Infantino perform key roles.

Trump and Infantino embraced both squads while handing out medals to Club World Cup champions Chelsea and runners-up PSG.

They both handed the Club World Cup trophy over to Chelsea captain Reece James before sticking around for the trophy lift.

Trump, 79, was still standing in the middle of the Chelsea players as James lifted the trophy and the players started celebrating.

The players did not appear to mind Trump gatecrashing the trophy lift but a number of fans took to social media to express their displeasure.

Cole Palmer reacts to Chelsea’s Club World Cup win

‘It’s a great feeling. Even better because everyone doubted us before the game, we knew that. To put a fight on like we did, it’s good.

‘The gaffer put a great gameplan out. He knew where the space was going to be. He tried to free me up as much as possible and I just had to repay him and score some goals.

‘[Enzo] is building something special, something important. Everyone has talked a lot of s*** about us all season but I feel like we are going in the right direction.’

‘Someone take Donald out, he’s ruining the moment,’ one Chelsea fan said, while another supporter added: ‘It’s so annoying seeing someone not involved in the game at all ruining the moment for the players.’

Shortly after the trophy presentation, DAZN presenter Ade Oladipo said: ‘What a moment. It was a bit awkward with Reece James not knowing if he was coming or going.

‘I thought Donald Trump, the President, was going to lift it at one point! But Reece James does get his hands on another trophy.’

The Club World Cup was held in the United States 12 months before the country hosts the 2026 World Cup along with Canada and Mexico.

On the Club World Cup final, President Trump said: ‘It’s a big thing. Gianni [Infantino] has done such a great job with soccer, or football as they call it. They’re doing great things for the sport.

‘We flew over the stadium earlier and it was packed. The four matches here were packed and that was very impressive, it was great.’

Despite a healthy attendance at the Club World Cup final, which included a half-time show involving Coldplay, attendances across the tournament have greatly fluctuated.

Four matches failed to get 10,000 fans, though there was also 15 crowds of 60,000 or more.

After winning the tournament, Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca said: ‘I have no words for the players. They all deserve this and it’s a good moment.’

Chelsea return to action with a pre-season friendly against Bayer Leverkusen in less than a month before kick-starting their Premier League campaign on August 17.

‘I am very excited [about the future] but I’m more excited that we have three weeks off,’ Maresca added.
