If you want to know exactly how bad the injury suffered by New York Giants rookie running back Cam Skattebo in Week 8 against the Philadelphia Eagles was, simply take into account the reaction from Eagles fans at Lincoln Financial Field.
As Skattebo was carted off the field after a gruesome lower leg injury, Eagles fans gave him a standing ovation. That’s how bad.
The same fans who threw snowballs at Santa Claus and the same. The same fans who cheered when Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Michael Irvin suffered a career ending neck injury in Philadelphia in 1999. That’s how bad Skattebo’s injury was.
Skattebo was hurt with the Giants trailing 14-7 in the second quarter — he’d already scored a touchdown on a 15-yard pass from fellow rookie Jaxson Dart in the first quarter.
“Cam Skattebo is so transcendent that Eagles fans are cheering for him as he is carted off,” X user Chuck Bass wrote on his official X account. “America is healing.”
Skattebo had 110 yards of total offense and scored 3 touchdowns in a 34-17 win over the Eagles in Week 6.
“It has taken all of the air out of what is typically a really raucous atmosphere,” Fox Sports play by play analyst Kevin Harlan said during the broadcast. “Just a devastating and tough scene challenging the Giants moving forward.”
Fox Won’t Show Skattebo Injury on Broadcast
When Fox Sports came back from a commercial break after Skattebo’s injury, color commentator and 7-time Super Bowl champion quarterback
Tom Brady told viewers the network would not be showing Skattebo’s injury.
“That’s not something we’re going to show,” Brady said. “For pretty obvious reasons … the Giants are going to have to compartmentalize and move forward but that’s not easy to do.”
It’s a direct contrast to the days of the 1980s and 1990s, when networks would repeatedly show gruesome injuries.
There was no such quarter spared for those on social media, where Skattebo’s injury quickly became a worldwide trending topic — the former Arizona State star and 2025 fourth round pick (No. 105 overall) had quickly established himself as one of the NFL’s most talented young players just a few months into his career.
Outpouring of Shock, Disgust Over Skattebo’s Injury
Skattebo’s injury quickly became the biggest story of Week 8.
“Very classy from Eagles fans, giving Cam Skattebo a standing ovation as he has taken off on a cart to the locker room after a gruesome injury,” NBC Sports Philadelphia’s John Clark wrote on his official X account. “He gave a thumbs up to the crowd.”
“Absolutely loved watching Cam Skattebo this year played every snap as hard as he could and his love for the game was evident some weren’t sure if his success would translate from college… but he kept running dudes over in the NFL too,” NFL analytics guru Warren Sharp wrote on his official X account. “Get better soon.”
“Cam Skattebo with one of the worst injuries i have ever seen live,” Fade Away Media wrote on its official X account. “Just awful. Prayers up.
