The Philadelphia Eagles entered the offseason knowing they had work to do off the edge. Now, one potential solution is starting to gain traction.
In a recent âOne Free Agent on the Market Who Can Help Each NFL Team in 2026â breakdown from Bleacher Report, the Eagles were linked to former No. 4 overall pick Clelin Ferrell as a low-risk option to help stabilize their pass rush.
âWhile Ferrell may carry the label of a draft bust, heâs still just 28 years old and coming off the best stretch of football of his career. He had four sacks in 233 snaps over eight games with the 49ers last year,â the report noted.
That context matters.
Philadelphia originally made a bigger swing last season, trading for Jaelan Phillips during the year with hopes of making him part of the long-term plan. Instead, Phillips cashed in elsewhere. He signed a four-year, $120 million deal with the Carolina Panthers, and left the Eagles searching for answers again.
Now, the focus has shifted toward his replacement.
Clelin Ferrell Emerging as Low-Risk Option for Eagles
Ferrellâs career hasnât followed the path many expected when he was taken No. 4 overall in 2019. But the version of him that showed up late last season is what makes this conversation interesting.
In a limited role with San Francisco, Ferrell quietly produced. Four sacks in just 233 snaps doesnât jump off the page at first glance, but the efficiency stands out.
He wasnât asked to carry a major load. He just had to win in key spots, and he did just that.
Thatâs exactly the kind of role the Eagles can offer.
Philadelphia isnât necessarily looking for a full-time edge rusher to replace Phillips outright. Instead, the team is betting on internal development from Nolan Smith Jr. and Jalyx Hunt, while still needing another rotational piece who can provide pressure in key situations.
Ferrell fits that mold.
At 28, heâs still young enough to offer upside, but experienced enough to contribute right away. Itâs not about recapturing top-five pick expectations. Itâs about finding a role where he can be effective.
Eagles Leaning Toward Value Over Splash
If this offseason has shown anything, itâs that the Eagles explored bigger options before landing here.
Earlier this offseason, reports tied Philadelphia to elite pass rushers like Maxx Crosby and Myles Garrett. But those types of moves require significant capital, and Howie Roseman was unable to pull the trigger on that kind of blockbuster trade.
At this stage, a move like Ferrell makes more practical sense.
He wouldnât require a long-term commitment or a massive deal. The Eagles are still very much in a competitive window, but theyâre also trying to balance long-term flexibility.
Adding Ferrell wouldnât prevent them from continuing to invest in the position, especially through the draft. If anything, it would give them more depth.
And if that late-season version of Ferrell carries over, the Eagles may end up getting exactly what they need without making a move theyâd have to sell their soul for.
