Former Buffalo Bills receiver Gabe Davis has seen plenty of interest since he hit the open market this offseason, but is still waiting for his next contract and a new team.
Davis was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars with an injury designation, ending a turbulent one-year tenure with the team after leaving the Bills. Davis has had a series of free agency visits including one this week with the New Orleans Saints, but remains unsigned.
Another Visit for Gabe Davis
NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported this week that Davis visited the New Orleans Saints, having already made visits with the Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Giants, and San Francisco 49ers.
The lack of any new contract could signal concerns about Davis’s health after his abrupt release by the Jaguars. Davis was cut loose on May 7, with Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk reporting that he failed a physical with the team.
“The Jaguars made wide receiver Gabe Davis’ departure official, releasing him with a failed physical designation,” Williams wrote.
“Davis tore the meniscus in his left knee in November and was expected to need six months to recover from the injury, which limited him to 10 games in his only season in Jacksonville. He caught 20 passes for 239 yards and two touchdowns in 2024.”
Davis came to the Jaguars with high hopes after a successful tenure with the Bills, growing into the No. 2 receiver behind Stefon Diggs. Davis signed a three-year, $39 million contract with the Jaguars last offseason but failed to turn into the playmaker they hoped as he was hampered by injuries.
NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport said in an appearance on Good Morning Football that Davis still has a ways to go before he’s ready to hit the football field.
“They hosted Gabe Davis on a visit,” Rapoport said. “Not quite ready to sign just health-wise yet.”
Bills Have New Plans at Wide Receiver
The Bills overhauled their wide receiver room last offseason, parting ways with both Davis and Diggs and replacing them with a combination of veteran pass-catchers and second-round pick Keon Coleman.
Syracuse.com writer Matt Parrino wrote that the Bills could consider a reunion with Davis, who could take over the role played last season by Mack Hollins. Davis has a proven connection with quarterback Josh Allen, and the Bills have a tendency to bring back former players when they are available.
“Depends on the money, of course, but Mack Hollins’ role – the one originally held by Davis – is currently vacant,” Parrino wrote in a post on X. “He’s a locker room guy who had his best success with Allen. When healthy, he’s shown to be a viable deep threat. All about the money though. Would he take $3-5 million?”
It’s not clear how much more rehab Davis could need to fully return from the knee injury that cut short his 2024 season.
The Bills made more changes this offseason, signing veterans Joshua Palmer and Elijah Moore. The team went heavy on defense in the NFL draft, but have signaled that Coleman will be taking on a bigger role in the coming season.
