Ex-Browns QB Gets 3-Word Message From Shedeur Sanders After First Win

Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders showed some love to Tyler Huntley after he picked up his first win of the season with the Baltimore Ravens.

Huntley spent training camp and the preseason with the Browns. He was let go during cuts and quickly found a familiar home with the Ravens, where he’s spent the majority of his career. Huntley started on the practice squad but was bumped up to the backup role this week. He took the place of Cooper Rush, who had struggled in relief of Lamar Jackson.

Huntley passed for 186 yards and a touchdown in the 30-16 victory for the Ravens — Cleveland’s AFC North rival.

“Proud of ya,” Sanders commented on the most recent post from Huntley.

Tyler Huntley Became Mentor for Shedeur Sanders With Browns

Sanders has been adjusting to life as a backup after starring at quarterback at his previous stops in high school and college. Huntley knows the life of a backup quarterback and became a valuable mentor for Sanders during training camp.

“I would say I’m thankful that Huntley here,” Sanders said during the preseason. “He gave me a perspective of quarterback that I feel like I needed … I feel like God’s sent him here for a reason, honestly, just to talk and to be like a mentor towards me and his career, also. But being in that backup role, he faced that also in his career and he just gave me the mentality on what I need to do and how I need to stay on top of everything. Just helping me out throughout everything.”

The Browns quarterback room has already seen a few iterations. The team opened with Huntley, Sanders, Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel and Joe Flacco in the mix. After the preseason, the Browns cut Huntley and traded Pickett to the Las Vegas Raiders.

Flacco began the year as the starter but was benched after a 1-3 start to the season. Gabriel took over but hasn’t provided much of a spark for the Cleveland offense, which ranks near the bottom of the league in just about every major category.

Browns Not Ready to Start Shedeur Sanders

Gabriel has done little to show through four starts that he can be the long-term option at quarterback for Cleveland. But the team is also not ready to see what Sanders can do just yet. The Browns are expected to stick with Gabriel when the team emerges from their bye week.

“Honestly, my focus is where we are right now,” Stefanski said of making Sanders the starter. “That’s not my focus.”

Sanders will spend the bye week getting healthy. He was a late addition to the injury report for Week 8 with a back issue. He attempted to give it a go in pregame warmups, but ultimately decided not to suit up.

“We were hopeful that he’d be able to move around well enough to suit up on Sunday. But, put him through a pre-game warm up, and obviously just didn’t feel like he was ready to play,” Stefanski said. “But he’s getting better every day and I’m hopeful that he’ll continue to improve.”

The Browns will face the one-win Jets after the bye week with a prime opportunity to turn things around.
