Former Cowboys HC Could ‘Unlock Potential’ for No. 1 Overall Pick in AFC South

The Tennessee Titans find themselves looking a once-in-a-generation opportunity in the face with quarterback and 2025 No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward.

Develop Ward the right way and they can save the franchise from its current death spiral — no winning seasons since 2021 and a 1-11 record to this point in 2025.

One key to the Titans getting back on track is hiring its third head coach in 4 seasons — they fired Brian Callahan after Week 6 and after him going 4-19 in less than 2 seasons.

One coach who is on the market and has a reputation for developing elite young quarterbacks is former Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy, who won a Super Bowl with a young Aaron Rodgers with the Green Bay Packers in 2010 and turned Dak Prescott into an NFL MVP candidate in Dallas.

Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer put McCarthy among the leading candidates to take over the Titans and work with Ward.

“The initial thought, post–Brian Callahan, had been to find more experience and someone who could work with Cam Ward,” Breer wrote on Monday, December 1. “Along those lines, and tied into the networks of the guys on hand, ex-Bears coach Matt Nagy (who has ties to general manager Mike Borgonzi) or ex-Cowboys and Packers coach Mike McCarthy (who has ties to president of football operations Chad Brinker) could wind up being the guy. But that hasn’t stopped the Titans from looking at a wide array of candidates, even guys such as Chargers DC Jesse Minter and Rams DC Chris Shula, who don’t fit into the above box.”

Titans Not Only Team Who Needs QB Whisperer

The Titans won’t be the only team looking for someone to guide the career of a young quarterback who might be the key to pulling them from the depths.

The most appealing job opening — to this point — will be with the New York Giants. The Giants already have a solid defense in place and a potential star at quarterback in 2025 first round pick Jaxson Dart. The biggest thing that’s seemed like it was holding the Giants back was former head coach Brian Daboll, who was fired after a 2-8 start.

The Giants have been even worse in recent years than the Titans. They only have one winning record and one playoff appearance in the last decade, when they 9-7-1 and lost in the NFC Divisional Round in 2022.

McCarthy might jump at the opportunity to go against the Cowboys twice a year after Dallas unceremoniously dumped him after he went 49-35 in 5 seasons, including 3 playoff appearances.

Bleacher Report’s Moe Moton thinks McCarthy should actually be the top candidate for the Giants.

“Mike McCarthy would be the safe choice among the potential candidates, with the best resume,” Moton wrote on Tuesday, November 11. “He’s a proven Super Bowl-winning head coach with a winning record at two blue-blood franchises: the Green Bay Packers and the Dallas Cowboys. In Green Bay, McCarthy molded Aaron Rodgers in his early years. Also, under his tutelage, Dak Prescott led the league in QBR (73.4), completions (410) and touchdown passes (36) in a Pro Bowl 2023 campaign. If the Giants want an old-school coach who is accomplished and knows how to build a winning program, McCarthy is by far the best option.”
