The NFL MVP won’t be decided for another few months, with a ton left to play out. The season is still not even halfway done, so MVP talk might be a bit premature. However, if there seems to be an early favorite regarding play, Dak Prescott of the Dallas Cowboys could be getting a nod. Unfortunately, because Prescott’s team hasn’t played that well, it seems unlikely that he’ll get the award.Â
However, others believe that Prescott has a chance to do so, including former Philadelphia Eagles great Donovan McNabb, who had Prescott on his list at No. 1, explaining that because the defense has been so bad and CeeDee Lamb has been hurt, it’s so impressive that he’s playing at this type of level.Â
“Dak, first of all, has no defense whatsoever,” said McNabb during an appearance on “Up & Adams.â “CeeDee Lamb has been hurt, they have been mismatching different guys. It’s pretty much just been him. They are running the football, yes, but their play-action game and intermediate passing game has been on fire. The reason they are in the position they are is because of Dak.”
Dak Prescott Gives Cowboys a Chance to Win
Prescott has been as good as everybody has said he’s been, playing the best football of his career. When Prescott has been healthy, there’s reason to suggest that he’s one of the top five to 10 quarterbacks in the NFL, and that was evident in 2023 when he threw for 4,516 yards, 36 touchdowns, and just nine interceptions. He looks like he could be breaking some records in 2025 from that previous performance, throwing for 1,617 yards and 13 touchdowns already.Â
But if the Dallas Cowboys don’t improve on the defensive side of the football, none of that will matter too much. According to ESPN, Jerry Jones still believes this team has a chance, which could equate to them making a trade in the near future.Â
“It just reminded me that we are still in it,” Jones said, “I see much parity and then you factor in that these teams get compromised with injury — and we can have and may [have it too] — but if we should have some good go of it here over the next weeks ahead with our injury situation and return of injury and we can get some wins,” before adding how “encouraged” he is for his team’s prospects given the stellar play of quarterback Dak Prescott so far this season.
“The last thing that I’m thinking about is in any way being out of the hunt.”
Will the Cowboys Make a Trade?
Jones has been on record in the past stating that if the Dallas Cowboys have the opportunity to make a trade for a defensive player, they’ll go out and do it. They acquired a few assets in the deal for Micah Parsons before the season, which certainly didnât help the defense, but at least gave them some ammo to go out and make a trade.Â
“Well, if there is a trade that would help the defense, we’re in position to make that trade,” Jones said.
