The Jacksonville Jaguars are one of the pleasant surprises in the NFL this year, starting out 4-2 and even notching a prime-time win over the Kansas City Chiefs. Considering this team had the No. 5-overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft for a reason (they were really bad last year), their record so far is pretty shocking.
One of the reasons for the improvement is quarterback Trevor Lawrence. While he’s still not living up to his first-overall draft status from 2021, he is settling into head coach Liam Coen’s system.
“I’m getting more and more comfortable in the system,” Lawrence said.
It’s his third NFL system in five years in the NFL, which is a lot to put on any quarterback.
Liam Coen sees a lot of improvement in Trevor Lawrence as well
So far this year, Lawrence is completing 61.1% of his passes, which leaves quite a bit to be desired. He’s also thrown for 1,324 yards in six games to go with eight touchdowns and just five interceptions.
Coen is pleased with what he sees.
“You look at his ability to still use his legs in some areas: I thought there was some really good moments of being able to play some things off schedule, make some plays,” Coen said. “We have to continue to help him create one-on-one opportunities down the field to be able to push it down there.
“I do think there’s been improvement. I think he has confidence right now. I do.”
Trevor Lawrence had to rebound from last season’s injury
Lawrence missed seven games in 2024 due to a shoulder injury and a concussion. He wasn’t playing terribly well before that, completing just 60.6% of his throws for 2,045 yards, 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions in 10 games.
“Obviously missed a lot of time last year and it has been a while since I’ve been out there full go,” Lawrence said. “I feel like I’m getting more and more comfortable even just being in the pocket again and like moving around.
“I think the last couple weeks have been better examples of that.”
It’s good that he’s getting more comfortable, but the clock is ticking for him to become the superstar that they’d hoped for.
“There are a lot of areas that still can improve a lot on,” he said. “That’s a good thing about our offense, specifically – is just we’re still leaving a lot out there and we can score a lot more points and be a lot more productive. Some of the plays last week I need to clean up, some of the progression stuff.”
Trevor Lawrence has a new contract that doesn’t kick in until 2026
The bottom line is that the Jaguars could be stuck with Lawrence for some time. He was the first-overall draft pick in 2021, hasn’t performed up to expectations and now has a five-year, $275 million contract extension. And, here’s the thing about that contract: it doesn’t even start until next year.
Lawrence wasn’t drafted by Coen or new general manager James Gladstone. Which means, obviously, he’s not their guy. They inherited him, but if they decide they are done with a guy who isn’t theirs (kind of like they tried to do with Travis Etienne this offseason), then what will their options be?
