Former Head Coach Jon Gruden Sees Giants Job as ‘Desirable’

The New York Giants‘ vacant head coaching job is expected to be one of the most desirable jobs this upcoming offseason.

Despite lackluster results the last few seasons, there’s no question the Giants roster has talent, and a potential franchise quarterback in rookie Jaxson Dart.

That’s what makes the opening one of the most attractive to a former head coach like Jon Gruden.

“I mean, it is one of the founding franchises of football, and it’s New York, it’s Jaxson Dart. You know what kind of talent he is. You know he has the arm talent, the athleticism.”

“I know he’s a smart guy, he’s a great competitor, and I think that’s pretty much a good summary of why this is a desirable job.”

Jay Gruden Says His Brother is Interested in Giants HC Job

While Gruden didn’t outright say he was interested in coaching the New York Giants, his brother, Jay Gruden, said as much on Underdog’s The Arena.

“I think he’d be very interested [in the Giants’ head coaching job]. He loves Jaxson Dart. If you want a guy to run RPOs and zone reads, he’s not your guy,” Gruden said.

“If you want a guy to come in the building and challenge your quarterback every day, with personnel groupings, formations, snap counts, motions – a way to develop the quarterback the right way – then yeah, I’d be interested in having Jon come coach my team.”

Gruden has not been a football coach since his 2021 resignation from the Las Vegas Raiders, an incident that has left unresolved lawsuits between him and the NFL.

But in an unofficial capacity, he has served as an offensive advisor for teams like the New Orleans Saints, and has made it clear he is interested in coaching again.

Jon Gruden Wants to Get Back Into Coaching

Most recently, Gruden stated he wished to return to coaching in college football, specifically in the SEC.

“The only reason I really came here is I want to coach again,” he said in August when addressing the Georgia Bulldogs football team.

“I’m being honest with you, I do not bull[expletive], either. I want to coach again. I’d die to coach in the SEC. I would love it. I would [expletive] love it.”

But is a return to the college ranks really what Gruden wants?

Probably not. The NFL is where the former Super Bowl-winning head coach would probably rather be, but maybe he understands the difficult situation he’s in thanks to his previous resignation.

If the New York Giants are looking for an experienced head coach who could lead them back to their winning ways, Gruden might be the guy.

Throughout his 15-year coaching career, Gruden has accumulated a 117-112 record, with a Super Bowl trophy to show for it.

Interim head coach Mike Kafka is going to have his chance on the job to prove he can be the long-term leader on the sideline for Big Blue.

But if New York is done taking chances on first-time head coaches, Gruden would be the ideal candidate for a directionless team like the Giants.
