Former Knicks Player Is Too Good to Still Be Without a Gig

The New York Knicks have showed their stuff during the NBA’s Summer League, and now, they’re getting back to the business of getting some fresh players on their roster. There are a just a couple of spots left on the Knicks’ main squad, but those positions will make a difference in the 2025-26 season, so new head coach Mike Brown has his work cut out for him.

Plenty of solid NBA players that went into free agency during the offseason are still without a gig. One of those is a former Knicks player who’s just too talented to still not have a deal, and that player is Quentin Grimes.

The New York Knicks drafted Grimes with the 25th overall pick during the 2021 NBA draft. Grimes never quite hit is stride with the Knicks, but he had a fantastic season during the 2024-25 NBA season, which Grimes spent with both Dallas and Philadelphia. The 76ers have expressed that they want to work out a deal with Grimes, and he’s worth top dollar right now, but so far, a deal hasn’t come through. If the 76ers are smart, they’ll give Grimes what he wants and keep him on their roster.

Former Knicks Player Is Budding in the NBA

Grimes was a promising draft pick for the New York Knicks, but perhaps it was just a bit too early in his NBA career, because he never popped with the team. As Atticus O’Brien-Pappalardo of The Daily Knicks notes in a feature published on Saturday, July 19, “Grimes’ career never fully got off the ground in New York. There were certainly flashes, as both a defender and spot-up shooter, but he was never given the role he thought he deserved. The Knicks eventually shipped Grimes to the Pistons as part of a package to acquire Bojan Bogdanovic and Alec Burks.”

But, Grimes had a significant turnaround with the Philadelphia 76ers. He got plenty of playing time, due to injuries, and during over 28 games, he averaged 21.9 points, 4.5 assists and 5.2 rebounds.

“Grimes proved he is more than capable of operating the pick-and-roll and making all of the right passes when he needed to,” O’Brien-Pappalardo notes in the piece. “He also showcased his pull-up shooting ability, taking four of them per game.”

Don’t Worry, Grimes Will Sign

For Grimes, he’s really too good to not get signed, so it’s not a question of if this will happen. It will happen at some point.

“It is not as much a matter of whether Grimes will get a deal as it is a matter of when the deal gets signed and for how much,” O’Brien-Pappalardo states. “Grimes is a restricted free agent, and the 76ers have made it clear that they want him on the team going forward last year.”

So, don’t lose sleep over Grimes. He’ll be just fine. Even though he’s not with the New York Knicks anymore, it’s nice to see this young talent start to flourish in his NBA career, and for him, it really seems as if the best is ahead.
