Former Ravens Pro Bowler Joins Wild QB Battle in AFC North

Just when you thought things couldn’t get any stranger in the quarterbacks room for the Cleveland Browns … they go and surprise us again.

The Browns added yet another quarterback to the ongoing saga to start in 2025 by signing Tyler Huntley on August 4.

Huntley earned Pro Bowl honors with the Baltimore Ravens in 2022, starting in place of an injured Lamar Jackson.

“When you have two quarterbacks, you have none,” Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio wrote. “When you have five quarterbacks, you’re the Browns. When you have six quarterbacks, you’re f—ked … The reason is far less dysfunctional than the Browns have been. Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel have hamstring injuries. Shedeur Sanders has a sore shoulder. They need healthy bodies to get through practice. Enter Huntley.”

Former Super Bowl MVP Joe Flacco is currently listed as the starter.

The Browns also have one of the NFL’s highest paid quarterbacks not playing this year in Deshaun Watson, who signed a 5-year, $230 million contract in 2022 but is out for the season after tearing then re-tearing his Achilles tendon.

Huntley has a 5-9 record over 14 starts as a backup for the Ravens and Miami Dolphins over the last 5 seasons. Huntley went 2-3 as the starter for the Dolphins in 2024.

Huntley’s Second Stint With Cleveland

Things were just as much of a mess when Huntley spent last offseason with the Browns only to be release during final roster cutdowns.

“As a member of the Baltimore Ravens, Tyler Huntley was never going to dethrone Lamar Jackson,” Bleacher Report’s Brent Sobleski wrote on July 3. “He didn’t receive a fair shot with the Cleveland Browns because their investment in Deshaun Watson crippled their decision-making process. He joined the Miami Dolphins as QB3 last season before being thrust into the lineup. The team finished 2-3 with Huntley as the starter … Huntley provides better dual-threat capabilities that can become part of the designed run game. If a starting quarterback suffers a short-term injury, he can keep the ship afloat.”

While the Browns now have 6 quarterbacks on the roster, 5 of them weren’t even with the team last year, although presumed starter Flacco won NFL Comeback Player of the Year honors with Cleveland in 2023.

Huntley Went Undrafted After Starring in Pac-12

Huntley was a 3-year starter at Utah and earned All-Pac-12 honors in his final college season in 2019, when he threw for 3,092 yards, 19 touchdowns and 4 interceptions in 14 games to go with 290 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns as the Utes earned a spot in the Pac-12 Championship Game.

Huntley went undrafted in 2020 and spent 4 seasons as a backup for the Ravens and for Jackson, stepping in to go 2-2 as the starter in 2022 and somehow making the Pro Bowl — one of the more derided Pro Bowl picks in recent memory.

Through 14 NFL starts, Huntley has 2,786 passing yards, 11 touchdowns and 10 interceptions to go with 644 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns.

It’s not totally clear how he fits with the Browns moving forward as the fifth quarterback they’ve added this offseason. They traded with the Philadelphia Eagles to get Pickett, signed Flacco as a free agent, drafted Gabriel in the third round (No. 94 overall) and Sanders in the fifth round (No. 144 overall).
