Former Seahawks Safety Predicted to Retire if He Can’t Find New Team

There’s still three months until Jamal Adams’ 30th birthday, but the All-Pro safety may have played his final NFL game.

The former Seattle Seahawks star safety is still jobless as teams are set to open training camps, and the oft-injured Adams may be looking at retirement if a team does not sign him soon.

Adams has only played 15 games over the past three seasons and spent 2024 split between the Tennessee Titans and Detroit Lions. He had just seven tackles in five games last year.

Is Jamal Adams Going to Retire?

Adams had three huge seasons with the New York Jets, which is why the Seahawks traded for him in the summer of 2020. He also had a Pro Bowl season in his first year with Seattle by posting 83 tackles, 9.5 sacks and three passes defended, which earned him a four-year contract extension.

But age and injuries caught up with Adams quickly, which was noted by Lee Vowell of the FanSided blog “12th Man Rising.”

“One of the parts of Adams’ game that made him special was his ability to blitz and pressure quarterbacks,” Vowell wrote. “In his first season with the Seahawks (2020), he had 9.5 sacks and 14 quarterback hits. Since then, he has zero sacks and five quarterback hits. Injuries have robbed him of his explosiveness.”

Adams’ career took an ominous turn after he tore his quadriceps in Week 1 of the 2022 season against the Denver Broncos. Since, he has allowed an 82.3 completion percentage over the past two seasons, which is why Seattle cut him after the 2023 season.

“Adams is unlikely to find a home is that he plays a position that requires him to be somewhat decent in coverage. He isn’t,” Vowell wrote. “Since 2020, he has had a passer rating allowed of a paltry 104.7 or more in three of five seasons. In one of the seasons where he had a lower passer rating allowed (2022), he played only one game.

“Why would a team waste any money on a player who is rarely available? He has played only two full seasons in his career, and those were in his first two seasons of 2018 and 2019. Since 2022, he has appeared in just 15 games.”

Where Could Jamal Adams Sign?

Barring a catastrophic injury, there is not a great fit for Adams.

The Seahawks are unlikely to lock in Adams, since this administration in Seattle parted ways with him. A cheap one-year contract is possible though unlikely, since they spent a second-round pick on Nick Emmanwori in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Las Vegas Raiders have been a landing spot for ex-Seahawks, since legendary former Seattle coach Pete Carroll is now calling the shots. But Adams couldn’t make the Titans a year ago, and they picked first overall, which means the pickings are slim.

“Adams, at just 29 years old, needs to start thinking full-time about a life after football,” Vowell wrote. “He certainly won’t be coming back to the Seattle Seahawks, and he won’t with Pete Carroll and the Las Vegas Raiders. Adams might not have any other team that even thinks of signing him.”
