Giants’ Camp Skattebo Breaks Silence on Injury That Derailed his Training Camp

New York Giants rookie running back Cam Skattebo flashed explosiveness throughout OTA and minicamp practices, and was one of the offense’s early stars as training camp got underway in July. Then, injuries took the fourth round pick off the field for much of the summer.

A nagging hamstring injury kept Skattebo on the sidelines for the Giants’ first two preseason games and made him a non-participant for much of training camp, before finally taking the field in New York’s preseason finale against the Patriots. The former Arizona State standout logged three carries for four yards in the Giants’ preseason finale, but more importantly, felt healthy and ready to roll into Week 1.

“I had a few good days and then an issue with an injury, football is football, it happens,” Skattebo said following the game. “The main thing is you have to keep a positive mindset and make sure that you’re not letting it dwell on your daily life. I continue to come in here every day and try to get better.”

Skattebo figures to play a major role in the Giants’ backfield, alongside Tyrone Tracy, this season and despite the setbacks of the summer, the 5-foot-11 and 219-pound running back is confident in his ability to make an impact this fall.

“The mindset the whole way through was, ‘Get healthy,’” Skattebo said. “That was the main thing. If it took me six weeks, it took me six weeks. Every day is better. I’m getting better every day. “I was able to get some snaps in the game, and I felt great. I’m going to keep working on becoming more healthy and keeping my routine right.”

Giants’ Brian Daboll All-In on Jaxson Dart’s Aggressiveness

Head coach Brian Daboll and the Giants seem intent on starting Russell Wilson Week 1, but that doesn’t mean rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart didn’t make a strong impression and compelling case to be the starter this preseason.

Dart was among the most impressive rookie quarterbacks across the league, completing 32-of-47 preseason passing attempts for 372 yards with three touchdowns and zero interceptions while also showing a willingness both to take chances forcing throws into tight windows and try to make plays with his legs when things break down.

Daboll is a big fan of the No. 25 overall pick’s aggressiveness.

“I wouldn’t coach it out of him, there’s just certain times that you’ve got to make the right decision, and I would say this particular game is a good time to slide, in a preseason game,” Daboll said, of a 23-yard run that resulted in Dart taking a big hit. “Every situation is different. I’ve had different quarterbacks that could run and were productive running the football, but there’s a time and place you’d like to take as few hits as you can. I like Jaxson’s competitiveness, his toughness. You’ve got to make the right decision. Those are split-second decisions, I trust him, and I would never take his competitiveness away.”

Despite absorbing a big hit that he may have been able to avoid by sliding, Daboll is optimistic about what Dart put on film this summer, and his NFL future as a player that might just dictate the head coach’s job security beyond this season.

“Being a rookie quarterback is not easy,” Daboll said. “Being a quarterback is not easy. So he knows he’s got a lot of things to work on, but he’s made progress every day and I’m glad we drafted him. I’m glad he’s our guy.”
