Giants Get Major Update on Key Offensive Lineman Andrew Thomas Ahead of Chiefs Game

The New York Giants are still in search of their first win in the 2025 campaign, but they face a tall task in Week 3, as they have a matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday Night Football on their hands. Ahead of this game, though, the team has received an important injury update regarding star left tackle Andrew Thomas.

In their first two games of the new season, the Giants have been without Thomas, who is arguably their best offensive lineman, as he is still recovering from surgery on a Lisfranc injury in his foot that ended his 2024 campaign after just six games. However, it sounds like he could be in line to make his season debut on Sunday against the Chiefs.

Andrew Thomas Planning on Suiting Up for Giants in Week 3

New York selected Thomas with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, hoping he could become an anchor on their offensive line for years to come at left tackle. While Thomas has been a top player when he’s been on the field, the problem is that injuries have limited him to just 16 total games over the past two seasons.

In 2022, Thomas enjoyed a breakout campaign, earning a spot on the All-Pro Second Team for his strong play on the Giants’ o-line. That earned him a massive five-year, $117.5 million contract extension, but again, he hasn’t been on the field enough to justify that massive deal, and his injury woes continued in 2025 with his aforementioned absence in the team’s first two games.

It’s clear that New York is attempting to play it safe with Thomas, but with a 0-2 record, the Giants are already fighting to stay alive in 2025. With that in mind, Thomas has taken some big steps in his injury recovery throughout the week, and while he’s going to test his injury pregame, all signs are pointing to him suiting up against the Chiefs.

“Giants standout LT Andrew Thomas, who has yet to play this season while recovering from a Lisfranc injury, is planning to make his debut on Sunday, per me and Mike Garafolo,” Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported in a post on X. “The team will be cautious, and Thomas will work out pregame to be sure. But the plan is to go.”

Getting Thomas back would be huge for New York because when he’s on the field and producing, he’s one of the top left tackles in the league. After James Hudson III had a complete meltdown in Week 2 against the Dallas Cowboys, that forced fifth-round rookie Marcus Mbow into action, and while he held his own for the most part, it’s clear that Thomas is an upgrade over him.

Thomas still has a couple of hurdles to clear, but assuming all goes according to plan, he will be protecting Russell Wilson’s blindside on Sunday night. The Giants will need him to shake off the rust immediately, because they will be going up against a winless Chiefs team that desperately needs to earn a victory. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:20 p.m. ET, and while Thomas’ final status will be worth checking, the expectation is that he will be suiting up for this game.
