Giants HC Brian Daboll’s 3-Word Reaction to Jaxson Dart After First Loss

Ahead of Week 4 of the 2025 NFL season, the New York Giants chose to go in a different direction at the quarterback position by benching veteran Russell Wilson in favor of rookie Jaxson Dart.

Ultimately, the move seemed to pay off, with the Giants getting the best of Justin Herbert and the Los Angeles Chargers, who are considered to be one of the best teams in the NFL.

Heading into Week 5 against the New Orleans Saints, Dart was given an opportunity to prove his worth while also sticking it to a team that chose not to draft him in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Even though he was clearly motivated for his matchup, things didn’t go as planned for the Ole Miss product.

After Dart lost his first game as a starting quarterback in the NFL, Daboll talked about the performance and what he told his rookie quarterback in a postgame press conference.

That’s the NFL,” Daboll told Dart. “Every play matters, and he knows that. He’s as hard on himself as anybody. There’s a lot to learn from it, and that’s what we’ll do. There will be ups and there will be downs. I thought he started out really well, and then collectively we’ve got to do a better job.

“We’ve got to make the play down the field when we have an opportunity to make a play. We’ve got to hold onto the ball when we’re scrambling. Those are things that we’ll build off with him, but he competed. He was prepared and ready to go.

“Again, I know it’s a broken record, but it’s hard to win with five turnovers.”

There’s no question that Dart gives the Giants a different dynamic at the quarterback position, even without star wide receiver Malik Nabers, who was ruled out for the rest of the season due to a knee injury. The young quarterback is mobile and keeps defenses on their heels, but he has an issue with turnovers, as was made abundantly clear during Week 5’s loss to the Saints in New Orleans at Caesars Superdome.

Dart may have come into this matchup with an axe to grind, with the Saints deciding to pass on drafting him early in the 2025 NFL Draft, but he may have gotten too anxious against New Orleans while trying to prove his worth.

Along with throwing two interceptions, Dart fumbled the football, which tainted his first loss as an NFL starter and didn’t sit well with Daboll.

However, Dart has definitely shown why he is such a promising young quarterback in this league, with the ability to do a lot of different things under center. The 22-year-old has a bright future in this league if he can figure out a way to limit the turnovers while putting on a show like he has shown he can do at the highest level.
