Giants Make Subtle $3 Million Move as Training Camp Gets Underway

The New York Giants adjusted star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence’s contract just as 2025 training camp began in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

ESPN NYG beat reporter Jordan Raanan reported the news on July 24, informing: “The Giants added $3 million in incentives to Dexter Lawrence’s contract for 2025, sources said. Lawrence was scheduled to make $17 million this season. His deal runs through 2027.”

With the defensive tackle market surging around the NFL, it’s been rumored that Lawrence could push for more money if he wanted to. Instead, the Giants and the interior game wrecker came to terms on a somewhat minor financial move that should go a long way in keeping an integral team leader happy.

New Dexter Lawrence Contract Incentives Are Unclear at This Time, Could Foreshadow ‘More Serious Discussions’ in 2026

Although it was reported that the Giants added $3 million in incentives, the exact terms of the incentives are unclear as of July 24.

The Athletic’s NYG beat writer Dan Duggan talked a little more about the decision after the news broke on X.

“[I] have been teasing something like this all offseason,” Duggan began. “[The] Giants couldn’t justify having Lawrence as the ninth-highest paid DT in the league. But with three years left on his deal, it’s not really the time for a holdout. We’ll see how attainable the incentives are, but this is a nice sweetener and will probably lead to more serious discussions after the season.”

“Lawrence’s contract contained no incentives, so [they had] a blank slate to work with,” the reporter continued in a follow-up post. “Presumably, these will be classified as not likely to be earned so they don’t count against the cap this year.”

“Since Lawrence had a career-high nine sacks last season, any sack incentive will likely be lofty,” Duggan explained. Concluding: “Interested [to see] if [Giants general manager Joe] Schoen also manages to tie in team performance to any incentive.”

We should be able to determine more about the parameters of this new deal once the incentive terms are revealed.

Giants’ Defensive Line Aims to Prove Themselves at Training Camp

The Giants’ defensive line has received a lot of hype this offseason, but as Lawrence noted on July 23, the DL unit has not earned any of that recognition just yet.

“As a leader, I try to challenge everybody to prove themselves every day,” Lawrence said on Wednesday. “They want to talk about our D-Line, but we ain’t done anything yet.”

On Thursday, Lawrence’s group began the process of proving it on the field.

Per team reporter Dan Salomone, Brian Burns “timed up a snap perfectly for what would have been a tackle for loss.” And then “Kayvon Thibodeaux, whose offseason emphasis is to finish more plays (he had five half-sacks in 2024), notched a would-be sack in practice.”

“[Reserve] defensive lineman Elijah Garcia [also] bottled up the quarterback on a play,” according to Salomone, “which ended up going nowhere.” And finally, rookie first-rounder Abdul Carter looked as ferocious as ever in a video clip from practice, where he absolutely abused center John Michael Schmitz, who went tumbling to the ground at the end of the play.

The Giants Report shared this moment on X, commenting: “Abdul Carter lining up at off ball linebacker and puts JMS on his A—!”

At least so far, Lawrence’s D-line pep talk appears to be working.
