The New York Giants have an opportunity to reunite with former captain Jabrill Peppers after he was released by the New England Patriots on Friday, Aug. 29. Peppers initially made the Patriots 53-man roster on cut down day, but was surprisingly released after the fact.
The safety laced up in 32 games for the Giants between 2019-2021, racking up 127 solo tackles and two interceptions in that time. He was a leader both on and off the field for New York as a captain. Peppers remained effective in his three seasons with New England, playing in 38 games between 2022-2024 and was considered a pro bowl snub after the 2023 season when he had 78 tackles and two interceptions.
The Giants have two young safeties in Tyler Nubin and Jevon Holland, making Peppers a solid target to add some experience to their secondary.
The Patriots still owe Peppers his $4.32 million guaranteed on his contract this season.
Peppers Has Faced Some Off-Field Issues
Peppers only played in six games for the Patriots in 2024 because of some issues off the field. In October, 2024, Peppers was arrested after an altercation with a woman at his apartment. He was accused of putting his hand around the woman’s neck, pushing her down the stairs and slamming her head into a wall.
Though he was found not guilty on the aforementioned charges, his off-field issues were concerning enough to keep him out of 11 games. He did plead guilty to a possession of cocaine charge that stemmed from the initial incident.
Does Peppers Still Have Gas Left in the Tank?
Peppers was still a very good safety for New England in his six games last season, but as he approaches 30 years old, he is motivated to have one more strong season to help him get a long-term contract on the back-nine of his career. This drive could be beneficial for the Giants who are a young team looking for veteran help to solidify some of their weaker areas, their secondary being right there at the top of that list.
The former Michigan Wolverine is probably the safest bet on the market at the safety position, especially considering how shocked many insiders were that the Patriots decided to cut him.
There’s no reason the Giants shouldn’t be considering picking him up.
