Grigor Dimitrov Injury Update: World No. 21 Could Return For US Open

The latest Grigor Dimitrov injury update seems to be an optimistic one.

Following the Bulgarian star’s heartbreaking withdrawal from his fourth-round match with Jannik Sinner on Tuesday, Dimitrov’s manager, Georgi Stoimenov, has shared an update on the World No. 21’s injury.

According to Bulgarian outlet Tennis Kafe, Dimitrov suffered a partial tear of his pectoralis major muscle. While initial fears were that he had suffered a full tear and would be facing an extended layoff before making his return, the outlet is reporting that Dimitrov will be back in just over a month.

Although he will miss Masters 1000 events in Toronto at the end of July, and Cincinnati in mid-August, Tennis Kafe is reporting that with rehab, Dimitrov should be good to go for the start of the US Open at the end of August.

Dimitrov’s Withdrawal Against Sinner Makes it Five in a Row at Grand Slams

Prior to his withdrawal against Jannik Sinner on Monday, Grigor Dimitrov was poised to make it back into the quarter-finals of Wimbledon.

Despite building up a two-set lead over the World No. 1, Dimitrov was forced to retire for the fifth straight time in Grand Slams.

Back in late May, while competing at Roland Garros, Dimitrov wound up retiring from his first-round match heading into the fourth set. Much like his recent withdrawal at SW19, Dimitrov had a two-set lead over American Ethan Quinn prior to his retirement.

Just several months before that, at the start of the 2025 season, he was forced to retire from his first-round meeting with Francesco Passaro at the Australian Open.

At the time, the retirement made it three straight for Dimitrov going back to the 2024 season, where he was forced out of his US Open quarter-final match with Frances Tiafoe while up two sets to one, and leading 4-1 in the fourth set.

Prior to that, Dimitrov wound up withdrawing from his Round of 16 match against Daniil Medvedev at Wimbledon 2024 after an impressive third-round win over Gaël Monfils.

Jannik Sinner Wishes Grigor Dimitrov Well Following Fourth-Round Retirement

When Dimitrov went down in the third set of his fourth-round match against Jannik Sinner, it was quickly apparent that something was wrong.

Sinner quickly crossed over to the opposite side of the net to offer support, while trainers quickly made their way over to the injured veteran.

Following a brief medical timeout, a teary-eyed Dimitrov returned to the court and retired.

Moments later, Jannik Sinner spoke to those in attendance for his on-court interview, stating that the World No. 21 deserved to play in the next round:

“I don’t know what to say, he’s an incredible player. I think we all saw this today and he’s been so unlucky in the past couple of years. An incredible player and good friend of mine.”

“Seeing him in this position- if there would be a chance that he could play the net round, he would deserve [it]. I hope he has a speedy recovery.”

Sinner will now collide with Ben Shelton on Court 1 tomorrow as he looks to move one step closer to a Wimbledon title.
