How long is Sandro Tonali’s ban for Newcastle, why has he been charged again?

SANDRO TONALI is in the middle of a 10-month ban from football after the Newcastle star breached betting rules.

The Newcastle midfielder joined the club from AC Milan for £55million and was a key part of the team since then.

Sandro Tonali will miss months of action for Newcastle

But earlier this season, Tonali and Aston Villa Star Nicolo Zaniolo had to leave Italy’s Euro 2024 training camp after being told that they were involved in an investigation to do with betting offences.

“He and his family will continue to receive the club’s full support,” Newcastle said in a statement.

“Due to this ongoing process, Sandro and Newcastle United are unable to offer further comment at this time.”

Juventus midfielder Nicolo Fagiolo was also part of the investigation and he was given a seven-month ban by the Italian Football Federation.

In the end, Tonali was banned himself for 10 months.

And it’s just been revealed by the FA that Tonali has once again been charged with betting offences between August 2023 and October 2023.

Tonali has been given until April 5 to respond to the charge.

An FA statement read: “Sandro Tonali has been breached with misconduct in relation to alleged breaches of The FA’s Betting Rules.

“It’s alleged that the Newcastle United midfielder breached FA Rule E8 50 times by placing bets on football matches between August 12 2023 and October 12.”

Tonali now faces a longer spell on the sidelines.

When did Sandro Tonali’s ban kick in?

Tonali co-operated with Italian authorities and agreed that as part of his 10-month suspension, eight of those would be served in a rehabilitation program.

Italian Football Federation president Gabriele Gravina said: “The FIGC prosecutor and Tonali have reached an agreement which I have already approved.

“The agreement consists of a 10-month ban plus eight months of rehab activities and at least 16 public appearances.”

Tonali will therefore miss the rest of the Premier League season, Newcastle’s Champions League campaign, Euro 2024 and the start of next season’s domestic campaign.

Tonali played against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League earlier this season in what was his last game.
