Mason Greenwood is set to leave Marseille this summer, meaning Manchester United will cash in thanks to the sell-on clause in his contract.

While any boost to the transfer coffers is welcome, it does not look likely to be a huge windfall at Old Trafford.

Greenwood left Manchester United for Marseille in 2024 for £26.6million and has gone on to score 48 goals in 76 appearances across all competitions.

Despite his impressive return, Marseille have to sell players this summer due to financial constraints and the 24-year-old is set to leave.

Fenerbahce are leading the race for his signature and are reportedly close to completing a deal, but L’Equipe state on Thursday morning that Atletico Madrid are still in the running.

Roma were another interested party in the England international, but it now appears to be Fenerbahce or Atletico for Greenwood.

The BBC report that the Turkish club believe they can get the deal done for around €45m (£38.36m) and personal terms with the player have been agreed.

French publication RMC Sport report that a four-year deal has already been struck to take Greenwood to Istanbul.

Manchester United’s sell-on clause was reported as ‘significant’ when Greenwood left the club and it is believed to be around 50 per cent of profit on his next permanent move.

With Marseille expected to make between £10m-£12m in profit, that will see Manchester United bring in £5m-£6m thanks to the sell-on clause.

It is not a sum that will change Manchester United’s summer transfer plans, which are being frustrated so far as midfield targets prove difficult to land.

Tottenham have beaten the Red Devils to Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, while Aurelien Tchouameni has agreed a new contract with Real Madrid.

A deal has been agreed to bring in Ederson from Atalanta, while another has now been struck to sign Andrey Santos from Chelsea.

The 22-year-old is set to move to Old Trafford for an initial £48million, with a further £2m in add-ons.

So deals are getting done by the Red Devils, but they are perhaps not yet the profile of player that fans were hoping for on the club’s return to the Champions League.
