The Carolina Hurricanes got a major injury situation during their 4-3 shootout loss to the Florida Panthers on Friday night.
During the opening minute of the overtime period against the Panthers, forward Seth Jarvis went barreling into the net. Jarvis needed assistance getting off the ice and did not return to the ice.
Here’s a look at the play, as shown on the Gino Hard official X channel:
After the game, Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour stated about the injury:
“Is not good. He’s going to be out for a while.”
That’s no bueno for the Hurricanes. But it doesn’t really provide much insight into what happened to Jarvis and how long “a while” may turn out to be.
But according to medical expert, Dr. Harjas Grewal, the news could be bad for Seth Jarvis and the Hurricanes. The renowned expert stated the following on his official X account:
So, broken ribs sound bad enough. Players have pushed through such injuries, as Grewal noted. However, those are typically playoff heroics, not regular-season issues.
The initial prognosis could be four weeks, if no other issues emerge. But as Grewal noted, a collapsed lung could become an issue. That didn’t seem apparent as Jarvis left the ice. But then again, such injuries do take a few minutes to manifest themselves.
Jarvis Injury Could Force a Move by Hurricanes
If Jarvis has nothing more than a bad bruise or even broken ribs, the Hurricanes would likely weather his absence with internal options. The fear would Jarvis missing a much longer period due to a more serious issue. If that’s the case, the team might need to make a move.
Now, there’s no replacing Jarvis. He’s registered 29 points in 34 games this season. That’s something the Hurricanes won’t replace overnight. But they may need to find another depth forward who could at least chew up some ice time.
Unfortunately, the trade market doesn’t have a ton of those available. On Friday night, the Seattle Kraken sent Mason Marchment to the Columbus Blue Jackets for two draft picks. That might be something the Hurricanes could look into. Carolina could see a forward out there that might cost them a draft pick or two.
Carolina Big Game Hunting
It seems every season, the Hurricanes are out big game hunting. This season is no exception. Carolina will be looking to see what big names may be out there. The club was loosely linked to Quinn Hughes earlier this year.
Of course, the Canes did not get very far in that discussion. But that doesn’t preclude the Hurricanes from kicking the tires on other potential trade targets out there. Jarvis’ injury may accelerate that search.
For the time being, no additional moves will happen. The roster freeze has gone into effect. The Canes may be able to recall someone from the AHL on an emergency basis, given Jarvis’ injury. But that’s about it.
Hurricanes fans will have to wait until after the New Year, most likely for a trade to happen. While it could happen sooner, it remains unclear who might be next on the move.
